Job description

NON-CAREER PART TIME/SEASONAL

The Landscape & Learning program is a workforce development program operated by the City of Sacramento Department of Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment. The focus of this program is to prepare youth ages 14-17 within the City of Sacramento limits to ensure these young people have access to adequate positive opportunities, as well as to develop a ready and capable workforce with the stated region. Youth Aides work outdoors in city parks with crews that include an adult supervisor providing general park maintenance. Typical duties include general weeding, trimming, leaf removal, low limbing, and trash pick-up. On the job technical trainings are provided that develop essential employment and leadership skills for individuals. Youth Aides are required to wear boots. Hiking boots are acceptable.
SALARY: $16.00
HOURS: Monday-Friday 8:00am - 2:30pm (includes 1/2 hour unpaid lunch)

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Employees in this classification are non-career. Employment is limited to youths from 14 to 18 years of age who have been certified for employment programs through various local agencies.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Immediate supervision is provided by higher level personnel.The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform related duties as needed.
  • Perform a variety of manual, clerical, customer service, and/or maintenance work in specified community areas, including picking up litter, clearing weeds, low limbing trees, sweeping streets, and similar tasks.
  • Attend technical trainings to develop essential employment skills and build leadership qualities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • No special knowledge requirements.
Ability to:
  • Learn to use basic hand tools needed to perform community clean-up and maintenance work.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Develop job skills, proper work habits, and leadership qualities through work experience.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Age:
Must be between the ages of 14 to 18 at time of appointment.
Assessments:
If considered for appointment, candidates must:
  • Submit a valid work permit.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Pass a tuberculosis screening test if assigned to work with children or food.

Physical Requirements:
Depending on assignment, may require sitting and standing, the ability to move about on foot with frequent walking and frequent starts and stops.
Environmental Conditions:
Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to inclement weather such as: heat, sun, rain and wind; may be exposed to dust and pollens; intermittently lift, carry, or move equipment of 20 pounds or less.
Work Conditions:

3. Screening Committee: (Pass/Fail) - All applications received by the final filing deadline will be forwarded to the Youth Parks and Community Enrichment (YPCE) Department. YPCE will select the most competitive applications for further consideration.
4. Hiring Interview: Candidates selected for further consideration will be invited to participate in an interview process coordinated by YPCE. There will be no eligible list established, as positions will be seasonal and/or part-time. A hiring interview is not guaranteed.
5. Conditional Hire: Upon receipt of a conditional offer, the selected candidate must complete and pass LiveScan/fingerprinting. Failure to meet these prerequisites will be grounds for withdrawal of your conditional offer of employment.
