Reports to: Executive DirectorPosition Classification: March through May: 5-10 hours per weekJune through August: Full Time 40 HoursSalary: $40-$50 depending upon qualifications Position OverviewThe Young Mariner Program is the museums summer, on water, component of our Young Marine Project initiative, described in the attached. This program compliments the CCMM mission by actively fostering an appreciation for maritime culture in kids. Specifically, we provide a hands-on introduction to a wide array of maritime activities, including marine biology, navigation, maritime history, sailing, seamanship, and naval architecture.To do this, we integrate the Museums exhibits, our Dyer 29 research vessel, ADVENTURE, our historic catboat SARAH, and the classroom of Nantucket Sound to provide a fun, high content experience. Our hope is that no middle schooler will ever look at the water the same way after participating in The Young Mariner Program.In a Program Director, the museum is looking for an individual with a unique combination of expertise: 1.Deep knowledge and experience on and around such that they can be responsible for both the absolute safety and content quality of our program.2.Experience with kids such that they can effectively bring this knowledge and experience to the kids on a daily basis.
3.Administrative and institutional experience such that they can assist us in further developing the component parts of the Young Mariner Project as part of the museums leadership team.While this position is largely a summer position, our goal is to find an individual that appreciates our vision of combining maritime exhibits and experiences and is interested in making a longer term commitment to joining the museums leadership team.Daily Role The daily role of the Program Director is hands-on. He or she will be required to have a USCG six pack license and will be onboard or in the museum with the kids on a daily basis. Days are divided into morning and afternoon sessions, with six kids in each session. Program Director will have an assistant educator and a helper.
The Program Director will have day to day responsibility of running the program. The Program Director is expected to act as the face of the program, including budget oversight, daily execution of camp, daily safety of camp and participants, and quality of product delivered. Staff support is currently envisioned to be an assistant educator and aa helper Our highest priority is the safety and education of participants and ensuring they have an excellent experience on the water and ashore.An overview of the 2023 curriculum is below. This is subject to modification with input from the Program Director and Program stakeholders during the early spring of 2024.40% Local Marine Biology - The basics of local water quality and an introduction to the fish, birds, and mollusks that they will see every day they are on it.
In addition to onboard and shore side experiments and specimen collection, kids will visit a local oyster farm in Lewis Bay.20% Navigation and Seamanship - A basic, hands on, understanding of navigation (and its history) and the tools and rules that are used by people to get from here to there safely and efficiently. Kids will use traditional as well as modern navigation techniques to hunt for local spots of historical and geographic interest. Seamanship is taught through the real time docking, making ready and piloting of the boat. 20% Naval Architecture and Marine Physics This section is designed to have kids understand the types of boats that they see on the water and the basic physic underpinning their operation.
This takes advantage of our Cook Boatshop and includes an understanding of how a sail works (lift) and how a boat floats (buoyancy) as well as basic navel architecture. 20% Sailing One day is spent sailing SARAH, a traditional Cape Cod Catboat, learning the basics of sailing. Program Schedule: The program runs for nine (9) weeks from June 24, 2023, to August 22, 2023. Curriculum: Our goal is to continually upgrade the rigor and content of each of these sessions.
A perfect day is one where kids are moving fast and seeing as many new things as possible. While seamanship is not taught as a separate section, kids are encouraged to learn to help with the lines, bumpers, try steering by the compass and all the other teaching moments that a skilled and energetic educator can conjure up while onboard.Specific responsibilities: An approximation of the time commitment is below.March May 5-10 hours per week (13 weeks) (65-130 hours)Get to know the program and commit time to understand its history and aspirations.Learn how to run UltraCamp, the camper registration system.Provide input on and finalize the curriculum and the development of the specific summer 2023 schedule and required materials.Develop job descriptions for staffing based on above and lead in interviewing and hiring.Review existing marketing strategy and participate in marketing start up and some initial meetings with participating schools and other local organizations.Assist in marketing, particularly personal visits to schools, yacht clubs and other organizations.Review allotted budget and create and manage the working program budget.Review state and local summer camp guidelines and schedule necessary site inspections.Host and lead all site inspections for state and local requirements.Review and advise changes to website, reservation/camp sign-up systemJune August - 40 hours per week (8 weeks) (320 hours)Purchase materials for summer camp as needed for curriculum or participants (clothing, crafts, etc.).Complete hiring and other logistics preparation (orientation and training of staff, curriculum finalization).Keep camp records and documentation processes in line with MA State summer camp guidelines.Full responsibility for Program operations including overseeing program staff, participant drop off, check-in, on water teaching, safety, trouble shooting, safety, and pick-up, check-out processes.It is envisioned that the PD will be required to be available for 2-3 Saturdays during the summer for off-site program promotion. Education: Bachelor's (Preferred)Experience: Significant experience with middle school kids as a sailing instructor, educator, camp director or equivalent. License/Certification: CPR Certification (Required)First Aid Certification (Required)USGS six pack license
