Position/Title: Yard Associate I


Basic Function:

Becomes an integral part of the company and operation department. Provides assistance to customers with regards to questions, pulling the merchandise that they ordered, and restocking merchandise they are returning. Ensure the inventory is cared for and stored in it’s proper location. Keeping the housekeeping of the facility is maintained constantly.


Reporting Relationship:

The Yard Associate I reports directly to the Yard Foreman. In the absence of the Yard Foreman you will report to the General Manager or designated associate.


Authority:

The Yard Associate I, have the authority to do the job in the manner in which they were trained, mentored or using the best practices. With the understanding of reporting up any areas the company could improve, products we should carry, waste or better ways to do our processes.


Responsibilities:


As a Team Member:

  • Insure that you know your position, the policies and/or procedures on how to perform your job safely and efficiently. With the understanding that you are accountable to the team to perform your job in a manner to complete the team. Taking responsibility for the use of your time, completing your duties, level of customer service and reporting of any damage or loss.
  • Maintaining the work schedules written by your supervisor. Notifying your supervisor of any changes or upcoming events that could cause a change in your work schedule and working with your co-workers to help cover the schedule.
  • Always perform your task in a safe manner and in accordance to the company’s safety policy and best practice. Report any unsafe conditions or when appropriate fix them.

To inventory control:

  • Learn the inventory as to what it is called, how it is used, where is the sku#, and how does the company sell this item. An inventory location is assigned to each item. Each item must have a bin labeled with sku #, item description, and on selected items the retail price. Location should be adequate to properly store the level of stock desired, with easy of stock rotation, grouped in close proximity to like items, and provides the necessary protection required of the item. Assigned back stock locations on assigned items
  • Be sure to understand and properly use the designated areas for the following types of inventory; delivery staging, return to vendor, special order, will call, non stock items, closeout, seconds, back stock, etc. They should have signs designating which area it is, items should have sku # on them with the exception of the delivery staging area, and they should have order ticket numbers on them.
  • Merchandise should be in its location and properly organized and faced as needed.
  • When moving inventory into a customer vehicle or removing from the vehicle you must have paperwork for a pink and gold ticket, NO EXCEPTION. The items should be checked against the paper work using the sku number and description, not just the description. Clearly and accurately note changes on either customer’s pink and gold or packing slip from vendor.
  • When moving inventory from or onto a vendor’s vehicle this is called receiving. Proper receiving procedures must also be followed closely. Yard Associate I are limited to the amount of receiving due to not having a full understanding of every inventory item in the yard, so please know your boundaries on this and stay with in them, self monitor.

To customer service:

  • At Kent’s all customers will be greeted or acknowledged that you will be right with them, Be sure to always focused on your customer you are assisting, do not interrupt others when they are assisting a customer and never allow another to interrupt you unless properly asking respect from the customer. Be sure to ask for help if you are starting to get backed up or can not get to the customer timely. At time customers will load them self but you need to understand this is only an exception if the customer flow in the yard at that time warrants such. Always help the customer that they or the merchandise they are picking up requires it. Listen to complaining customer and handle them if within your boundaries, otherwise pass them up the chain so they are handled on the spot.
  • Assist customer with projects and cost saving ways to the best of your ability. Ask fellow peers if necessary.
  • House keeping is for both the customer to have a positive experience and for the care of our products. Watch for trip hazards or unsafe conditions.
  • Merchandising items for eye appeal and completeness of product lines.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest merchandise, featuring them and their benefits.

To Facility and Equipment:

  • Maintain the buildings and grounds working to maintain small repairs per your supervisor and that debris is picked up. Keep weed free.
  • Properly check each piece of equipment before use. If the piece of equipment requires a check off before use, do so. Be sure to understand and follow all safety rules.
  • Know and apply the lock down policy when appropriate.
  • Operate each piece of equipment safely and according to company and manufactures recommendations.

To Profitability

  • Ensure what is on the paperwork is what you are putting on or taking off of that vehicle.
  • Stay within your scheduled time unless prior approved by supervisor. If there is to be no overtime it is up to you to self monitor and report daily to your supervisor.


Requirements:

  • Education – Must have High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience – Non required, but 1 year sales, warehouse, or laborer experience a plus.
  • Skills, knowledge and abilities – Ability to perform basic math. Be able to read paperwork and have good communication skills.
  • Must have valid driver’s licenses.
  • Basic understanding of safe practices.
  • Computer skills a plus.

Work Conditions:

Ability to sit or stand for up to 4 hours at a time.

Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. over head occasionally.

Ability to exert 20 lbs. of force to move objects.

Work outside in all types of temperature conditions.


Key Performance Measures:

Maintain inventory in its appropriate location and check inventory against all paperwork in and out.


Complete notes change clearly and accurately.


Operate each piece of equipment safely and according to company and manufactures recommendations.
