Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill about 10 part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Writing Consultant positions for the Writing Center at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Oregon State University (OSU) Writing Center plans to hire around 10 consultants to support their peers with a variety of writing projects, such as course papers, application materials, and scholarship essays. You don't need to identify as a great writer to succeed in this position. We're looking for students who want to have conversations with other students about their writing, to listen and ask thoughtful questions, and to offer a reader's perspective.
One of the benefits of working as a Writing Consultant is professional development. We provide training and ongoing support for consultants to develop a range of transferable communication and facilitation skills.
The positions we are hiring for begin with 10 hours of asynchronous paid training toward the end of winter term 2024, followed by 3 hours of paid training per week in spring term 2024. Full work in the Writing Center begins in fall term 2024. Typically, consultants work between 10-15 hours per week, but some work more and some less, depending on their availability and requested hours.
Student employees may work a maximum of 24 hours per week across all positions in the university (20 hours for international students). The Undergrad Research & Writing Studio is staffed 9 AM to 6 PM Monday through Thursday and 9 AM to 4 PM Friday. Consultants also work a small number of remote hours based on their availability outside of Studio hours.
The OSU Writing Center does its best work when our staff is representative of the many identities within the OSU community. We hire consultants from a variety of majors and with a range of backgrounds and experiences with language and writing. We encourage applications from multilingual and multidialectal students, international students, members of historically underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, women, individuals with disabilities, veterans, and LGBTQ+ community members.
Position Duties
  • Conduct writing and research consultations in person and remotely via Zoom and written feedback via email
  • Have conversations about writing process
  • Welcome visitors to the Undergrad Research & Writing Studio and initiate conversations with them
  • Attend initial and ongoing training and weekly staff meetings
  • Participate in additional professional development activities
  • Complete Writing Center-related project work
