Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill three to five part-time (a maximum of 19 hours per week) GWC Writing Project Assistant Pool positions for the Graduate Writing Center at Oregon State University (OSU).
Graduate Writing Consultants work one-on-one and in writing groups, via in person and remote delivery, with graduate student writers. Graduate Writing Consultants use Writing Center training and best practices to inform their feedback, and exercise a high degree of flexibility within sessions. They are peers who work collaboratively with graduate student writers on processes and products of scholarly and professional communication.
The Graduate Writing Center offers one-on-one sessions for graduate student writers of all majors and disciplines. Graduate writing consultants provide crucial writing support to these graduate writers for developing and revising their writing at all stages of graduate programs of study. Frequently, Graduate Writing Consultants work with graduate students on a recurring basis, offering ongoing support and advice on various types of graduate-level writing, including seminar papers and manuscripts, theses and dissertations, proposals, and presentations.
Anticipated wage: $15.00 per hour
Position Duties
80-90%: Conduct Graduate Writing Center sessions: Work one-on-one or in groups remotely and/or in-person with graduate students to develop student writing expertise.
20-10%: Professional Development and Training: Participate in weekly training modules, orientations, and meetings designed to increase the consultant's ability to work effectively in a Graduate Writing Center with graduate students and their writing.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Ability to demonstrate graduate-level writing understanding and performance
  • Previous successful experiences at Graduate Writing Center
  • Proficiency in conventions of graduate-level academic writing
  • Commitment to and demonstrated proficiency in professionalism in a university setting
  • Commitment to and respect for diversity in a university setting
  • Effective communication skills for professional interaction with students, faculty, and staff
  • Must be willing and available to work a minimum of seven hours on-site per week

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups of people.
  • Experience teaching or tutoring writing.
  • Familiarity with Writing Center philosophies and best practices.
