Job description

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. These values are grounded in and expressed through the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an anti-racist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, anti-racism and inclusion.

The Writer/Editor works on a team of writers, editors and content specialists within Fred Hutch’s Marketing & Communications Department to seek out engaging stories for use across communications channels as part of an integrated content strategy. Reporting to the Managing Editor, the Writer/Editor translates complex scientific subject matter to inform and engage diverse audiences, such as scientific peers, patients and families, philanthropic donors, industry and health care delivery partners, and policymakers. The Writer/Editor is passionate about discovering and telling Fred Hutch’s stories for the public website (fredhutch.org) as well as other internal and external communications, contributed articles, executive communications and other materials supporting marketing and media relations activities.

This role offers a hybrid of virtual and on-site work, with the expectation of being in the Seattle office approximately 2 days per week.

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop, report, write and edit clear, accurate and compelling copy — from informative news stories and insightful profiles to marketing communications — for multiple audiences, with a particular focus on clinical research, immunology and cancer immunotherapy.
  • Execute on an integrated content strategy that builds Fred Hutch’s national presence and drives engagement among key audiences.
  • Collaborate as part of a proactive team responsible for foundational written content across owned and unowned digital and print channels. Work with designers, producers, marketing and media relations colleagues to ensure strategic alignment of that content as well as to conceptualize and develop multimedia content.
  • Develop strong relationships with colleagues across Fred Hutch’s scientific divisions and administrative departments to help identify and develop stories; attend select scientific meetings, lectures and events.
  • Apply knowledge of Fred Hutch people and research — and familiarity with current national and international conversations within relevant biomedical research, health sciences and technology fields — to develop story ideas and inform team content efforts.
  • Produce and edit web pages.
  • Maintain content and style guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of science writing experience.
  • Expertise in health and science writing with a proven ability to develop content about science for a variety of audiences, including lay audiences.
  • Compelling portfolio of published work.
  • Proficiency in web writing and search engine optimization best practices.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A passion for storytelling in all formats.
  • Ability to ideate and execute quickly.
  • Advanced degree in a scientific or technology-related field with a proven ability to write about science for a variety of audiences, including lay audiences.
  • Experience collaborating with writers, designers, web producers, and marketing and public relations professionals.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and meet deadlines and to work effectively on concurrent, diverse projects while maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Experience reporting, writing and editing in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with AP Style.
  • Experience in developing or collaborating to create photo and/or video content.
  • Ability to envision how content will be presented or distributed for a variety of audiences in diverse formats and across channels.
  • Broad understanding of and experience producing for digital channels and social media, including familiarity with web content management systems.
  • Experience in nonprofit research or health care industries.

Please includea cover letter and at least three writing samples with your application.

A statement describing your commitment and contributions toward greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in your career or that will be made through your work at Fred Hutch is requested of all finalists.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $72,946 to $109,408, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
