The work location will be headquartered in Horry County with some travel to Richland County.
Under direct supervision of the SC WISEWOMAN Program Manager, and in conjunction with the Health Department Manager and Regional Operations Director, the nurse's primary responsibilities are to provide direct patient care, patient education and counseling, coordination of services for patients, and patient needs assessments that support the program strategies, activities, and outcomes for the WISEWOMAN program; coordinate with program staff and internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective and timely completion of state and federal deliverables that meet related program standards.
This position requires excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills to effectively collaborate in a team environment; work with limited supervision in a team-oriented atmosphere; the ability to participate in research, think critically, and problem-solve.
The SC WISEWOMAN Program Nurse:
  • Will serve as the liaison between the health department and the Central Office for SC WISEWOMAN program leadership.
  • Will perform clinical screenings and support including obtaining appropriate heart disease and stroke risk factor screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, body mass index also known as BMI, and smoking), health risk assessment, and a medical history per program policy; obtaining appropriate laboratory tests, including CBC, BMP, Lipid Panel, A1C, Glucose per program policy; maintains confidentiality and documents care/services per agency policies/procedures.
  • Will provide risk reduction counseling and health coaching per program policy. Refer as indicated for evidence-based lifestyle programs that address nutrition and physical activity, tobacco cessation, and community-based resources that address individual risk factors and support lifestyle change.
  • Will provide follow-up per program guidelines, including positive laboratory test follow-up and referral follow-up, maintain confidentiality, and document care/services per agency policies/procedures.
  • Will assist with Medical Needs Shelter operations, maintains supportive nursing practice competencies to include, but not limited to, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal best practice injection administration, oral medication administration, and client emergency response including First Aid, CPR, and AED, and be willing and available to assist during times of public health emergency response.
  • Will maintain professional accountability as a licensed nurse.
  • This position may require standing for long periods of time and periodic lifting up to thirty (30) pounds.
  • Will perform other duties as assigned.

In the event of a declared emergency is subject to 24-hour duty on call and deployment to other areas of the state. Nursing response assignments may include, but are not limited to sheltering operations, disease outbreak investigation, mass dispensing/vaccination activities, community education, or other activities as directed.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements: Licensure as a Registered Nurse by the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Agency Additional Requirements: Require a valid driver's license. Requires certification in Basic Life Support and/or Basic/Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

This position is part of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control's Division of Diabetes & Heart Disease Management/Bureau of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention. The work performed supports DHEC's mission to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. Effective July 1, 2024, this position will transfer to the South Carolina Department of Public Health created by Senate Bill 399 which provides for the creation of the Department of Public Health to assume the public health-related functions of DHEC.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control offers an exceptional benefits package for temporary grant positions that includes:
