Job Title: Wildland Engine Boss (ENGB)
Department: Fire
Reports To: Deputy Fire Chief
Employment Status: Part-Time, Seasonal, Non-Exempt (hourly)
Wage Scale: $29.00 - $44.00 per hour (DOE)
Position Close Date: Open Until Filled


Position Summary:

The Engine Boss leads a single fire engine and attached personnel and is responsible for their safety on wildland fire incidents. This is a Part-time (20 hours per week minimum), hourly position performing duties as assigned and responding to intra/inter-state wildland fire incidents as part of a Syracuse Fire Dept. Wildfire Resource Team. Wildfire deployments typically include a 16-hour workday, up to 14 continuous days out of area, working closely with other firefighting personnel to accomplish common goals and objectives identified by fire officers. There are rare occasions that a wildfire deployment may extend to 21 days.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skilled in: Operation of the applicable tools and equipment; Working under stress and using good judgment in emergency situations.
  • Ability to: Present various options and approaches to problem identification and resolution; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; analyze situations and adopt a reasonable course of action; Work irregular shift hours.
  • Ability to: Provide for the safety and well-being of firefighters and assigned resources; complete fire reports, work plans, timesheets, and vehicle mileage cost/tracking paperwork.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and smell. Employee will also occasionally be required to perform a variety of physically demanding maneuvers and activities while involved in firefighting operations, including running, walking, stooping, bending, rolling, crawling, climbing, jumping, lifting, carrying, dragging, and safely operating assigned equipment and vehicles. Employee must successfully pass medical exam after job offer. Employee must pass the NWCG arduous pack test, consisting of a 3-mile hike with a 45-pound pack over level terrain under 45 minutes. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 200 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:
The noise level is usually quiet in office settings and loud at emergency scenes. Work is performed primarily in vehicles and outdoor settings. Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. Individuals are exposed to hazards associated with fighting fires including, but not limited to smoke, noxious odors, fumes, solvents, and oils.
Work can be under a variety of unfavorable conditions including harsh weather, poor or no lighting, extremes in temperatures, and all types of weather conditions. Individuals must be able to endure primitive camping conditions, long travel times, and extreme working conditions.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Valid State of Utah Driver's License Class "D"
  • Must have a current NWCG Red Card qualification of Single Resource Engine Boss (ENGB)
  • Must have knowledge of common paperwork and documentation required of an ENGB.
  • Must attain State of Utah OHV certification within 30 days.
  • Good Communication Skills
  • Proficiency in report writing.
  • Able to work under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to exhibit a high level of professionalism and integrity.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Utah CDL with Tanker Endorsement
  • First Aid / CPR or EMT Certified
