The Town of Los Gatos Department of Parks and Public Works is seeking a Part-Time (960 hours per year) Wildfire Mitigation Projects Manager. The Town has Federal and local funding available to perform roadside and open space vegetation management work to support fire fuel load reduction. The ideal candidate will have experience managing fuel load reduction projects and an understanding of managing projects with State or Federal funding. The candidate will work closely with the Director of Parks and Public Works (PPW) and the PPW's Grants Administrator.
The Parks and Public Works Department serves Town residents, by managing roads, parks, and associated public infrastructure. Our work includes engineering design, field maintenance, and compliance with regulatory standards and requirements. The PPW team provides services that directly impact the quality of life for the residents, businesses, and visitors to the Town.
The Town of Los Gatos is a general law city operating under the Council/ Manager form of government. The Town Manager and Town Attorney are appointed by and directly report to the Town Council. The Town's 150 full and part-time employees are organized into the following departments: Parks & Public Works, Community Development, Police, Library, and Administrative Services (Town Manager's Office Administration, Clerk Administration, Finance, Information Technology and Human Resources).
Nestled at the base of the majestic Santa Cruz mountains, located about 60 miles south of San Francisco, Los Gatos offers a small-town charm with a high level of community pride. With an approximate population of approximately 31,000, Los Gatos is a unique community offering natural beauty that inspires a healthy lifestyle. Los Gatos has a strong economic presence, with an award-winning downtown that offers unique shopping and dining, as well as local and regional favorites.
The position requires a combination of technical knowledge, an understanding of working with State or Federally funded projects, and excellent communication skills. Candidates of any background will be considered, provided they demonstrate an understanding of working within grant program requirements and experience managing contractors performing wildfire fuel load reduction or other emergency management related work. A thorough understanding of vegetation management projects is required.
Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Demonstrated experience managing wildfire or other related Mitigation Projects is required. Must possess a current and valid California driver's license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required of the position: Knowledge of managing and delivering state or federally funded projects, including preparing requests for bids, executing contracts, performing field inspection, documentation, and project closeout is desired. This position will require both in office work, field observation, and oversight of contracted work. Knowledge of Vegetation Management Plans and associated environmental clearance documents, and the ability to follow the Plan to complete fire fuel load reduction is required. Experience working with FEMA or other Federal granting agencies is desired.
Skill in utilizing software systems to assist in the monitoring of projects; skill in preparing reports and maintaining detailed records, skill in coordinating various programs and projects simultaneously; and skill communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, developers, contractors, and trades personnel; ability to monitor construction projects; ability to manage project budgets. Ability to understand and follow grant program requirements.
This position is a temporary, hourly position and not eligible for benefits.
