Job description

Founded in 1936, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) has grown into one of America's largest and most trusted grassroots conservation organizations with 52 state/territorial affiliates and more than six million members and supporters. The mission of the National Wildlife Federation is to unite all Americans to ensure wildlife thrive in our rapidly changing world. The National Wildlife Federation believes that in order to save wildlife and ourselves, we need to ensure that everyone in America has clean air and water, safe communities, easy and equitable access to the daily benefits of nature, and protection from the ravages of climate change. These basic needs, equally necessary and urgent for all people, are foundational to bringing the conservation movement and ethos into the 21st century.

NWF’s Offshore Wind Energy Program sits within the Climate & Energy Program and works to advance the responsible development of Offshore Wind power off of the East Coast, West Coast, and Gulf Coast. We advocate at the federal, state, and local levels to establish and implement ambitious Offshore Wind commitments and to ensure stringent wildlife protections, strong labor standards, community benefits, and stakeholder engagement are in place every step of the way.

To support our mission, the Offshore Wind Energy Program’s West Coast Senior Campaign Manager leads significant portions of Offshore Wind advocacy on the West Coast, with state specific campaign work in California and Oregon. In this role, you will lead campaign strategy and planning, implementation of campaign activities, and the cultivation of new and existing partnerships. You will report to the Senior Director, Offshore Wind Energy.

Your major areas of responsibility:

  •  Implement NWF’s advocacy for responsible Offshore Wind Energy development on the West Coast:
    •  Lead the development of campaign strategy and planning, in coordination with grantees and partners.
    •  Manage the execution of campaign activities and tactics (communications, digital, and field organizing) in California and Oregon. Work with Communications staff to develop and disseminate materials that promote NWF’s Offshore Wind Energy priorities.
    •  Nurture existing partnerships, and build relationships with new partners to support campaign goals. This includes representing NWF as a participant in relevant coalitions within the environmental NGO space, cultivating relationships across sectors (e.g industry, recreational anglers, Tribes and INdigenous organizations, etc.).
    •  Manage select consultants and/or partner agreements.
    •  Serve as a primary liaison to internal staff in the region.
    •  Represent NWF at coalition meetings, in the media, and directly to decision-makers.
    •  Within the first year, hire, onboard, and begin supervising a West Coast Campaign Coordinator, Offshore Wind Energy.
  •  Support West Coast program development and operations:
    •  Support fundraising activities, including drafting content for proposals and reports, and tracking progress toward goals.
    •  Fulfill limited administrative tasks as needed, including scheduling, note-taking, and maintaining and organizing digital records.

Qualifications:

Strong candidates for this position will have the following proficiencies:

  •  Seven or more years of relevant experience.
  •  Strong understanding of energy and environmental policy issues in California and/or Oregon, and knowledge of current challenges and opportunities in the field.
  •  Experience advocating for policy solutions at the state level.
  •  Experience using inclusive approaches in organizing campaigns, leading multi-stakeholder coalitions, and working across differences.
  •  Demonstrated experience utilizing environmental justice organizing principles - recognizes the role of race, gender, and other identities in shaping perspectives, and the disparate impacts our existing energy system has on marginalized communities.
  •  Strategic thinking and vision - quickly grasps the subtleties of complex issues, and identifies ways to tackle problems with an orientation toward equitable solutions.
  •  Capably leads partners in articulating shared goals and achieving measurable outcomes.
  •  Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  •  Ability to thrive in a multiple-task work environment, work independently, set priorities and follow them through to completion, with excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  •  Ability to handle conflict effectively by listening, maintaining an open mind to alternative ideas and courses of action, and encouraging productive resolutions.

NWF Values:

Your actions are expected to reflect the staff values of the National Wildlife Federation: collaboration, mindfulness, empowerment, inclusivity, and mission focus.  Your competencies should include:

  • Being motivated by values of equity and responsibility to those most marginalized.
  • Consistently bringing a high level of empathy and social skills to work and interpersonal interactions.
  • Actively seeking feedback, direction, and guidance from all team members and keeping staff informed of decisions that impact them.
  • Being dedicated to advancing NWF’s internal equity transformation and compelling partners and allies to incorporate equity into their work; and
  • Passion for and commitment to NWF's mission
