Summary: Fit up and weld together metal components and sheet metal components for standard and custom precision engineered and fabricated VAC chambers and systems with electric arc-welding (Gtaw and Smaw) equipment by performing the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
  • Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by Welding Engineer or Welding Technician. Starts power supply to produce electric current.
  • Strikes (forms) arc which generate heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.
  • Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
  • Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions. Examines welding for bead size and other specifications. Applies filler rod manually to supply weld metal.
  • Cleans or degreases welded joint or work piece. Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes. Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Preheats work piece with hand torch or heating furnace. Positions and clamps work pieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture, tacks assemblies together.
  • Continuous demonstration of a positive attitude.

  • Lead by example and motivate others to achieve continuous improvement.
  • Willingly assist with problem solving and react to all needs with a high degree of urgency.
  • Knowledge of operation and basic preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Act as a liaison between co-workers and all departments.
  • Assist in maintaining schedules to meet customer expectations.
  • Assume departmental lead in the absence of direct supervision.
  • Train welders in use of helium leak test equipment.
  • Proficiently leak test chambers using helium leak test equipment.
  • Ensure schedule is met.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may indirectly supervise or coordinate personnel and job functions to complete work in the department.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: Two-year welding certificate from an accredited college or technical school; or six to twelve months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Able to accurately measure with a tape measure and square to 1/32" and convert decimals to fractions.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: Basic knowledge of computers desired to log in and navigate to access job folders to view sales quotes if necessary to retrieve paint specifications. Use E drawings

Other Qualifications: Ability to distinguish stainless steel, carbon steel and aluminum and read blueprints and schematics.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Welding certificate desirable, not required.
