Under general direction the purpose of the position is to perform welding, fabrication (layout and design) and sheet metal work using a wide variety of metals. Employees in this classification function at journey level to accomplish assigned functions according to established safety standards, building codes and regulations applicable to the work. Position is accountable for is responsible for ensuring the integrity and safe operation of all equipment under charge.
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.   • Performs welding repairs and fabrication work of various metal components, e.g., pipes, tubing and fittings, automotive bodies and parts, crank cases, radiators, mowers, tractors, tracks, street sweepers, dozer frames, tanks, equipment trailers, tool boxes, brackets, braces, supports, hand rails, window grills, equipment guards and equipment, , brackets, beams, structural components, Fire Apparatus. Preheats, cleans, lays out, cuts, and fits material for welding; cuts welds, and resurfaces small and large castings; tempers special parts such as shovel bucket teeth, grader blades.
  • Plans, designs, fabricates, repairs, and installs non-pressure vessels which includes fuel tanks, hydraulic rams and their components, custom-made tools, sheet metal, and structural steel.
  • Fabricates from blueprints and prepares as-built drawings for various types of projects to include sheet metal and structural steel.
  • Operates pattern cutting, motorized cutting and welding torches, uses appropriate gases for each application, adjusts regulators, and selects appropriate settings and cutting tips.
  • Utilizes various hand and power tools, e.g., pipe cutters, cutting torch, pipe-threading equipment, solder gun, drill presses, pipe benders, portable and stationary grinders, manual benders, welding tools, hydraulic and air-powered tools.
  • Operates various arc, tig and mig welding equipment; adjusts welding power unit controls for voltage and current according to metal being welded.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
  • Performs all work in compliance with all applicable codes, standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinates work with other trades/crafts; assists other trades workers with special projects involving plumbing work.
  • Performs incidental blacksmith duties as required, including the manufacturing of parts for modified equipment and the repair of broken parts.
  • Operates various transport vehicles and heavy equipment, e.g., utility truck, utility van, forklift, manlift.
  • Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.
  • Performs welding repairs on Poly Tanks inside the vehicle and out.
Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: Four (4) years experience as a welder, one year of which may be vocational or technical training in welding; 8th grade and Eight years' experience as a welder.
Miscellaneous: Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License
Must have own hand tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to read and write English.
  • Ability to perform welding projects safely, accurately, and efficiently; knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of appropriate precautionary measures; knowledge and skill in the use of equipment and techniques employed in the welding trade.
  • Knowledge of the properties of various ferrous and non-ferrous metals in relation to welding and brazing.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, specifications and blueprints.
  • Skill in operating various handheld manual and electric tools and equipment, e.g., welding equipment, wrench, screwdriver, pliers, pry bar, pipe-threading equipment, pipe cutters, cutting torch, solder gun, drill presses, portable and stationary grinders, pipe benders, jackhammers, hydraulic and air-powered tools, gas, tig, mig, and arch welding equipment.
  • Ability to operate transport vehicles and heavy equipment, e.g., truck, van, forklift, manlift.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
  • Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion in the shop and out in field.
  • Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50 - 75 pounds)
  • Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass and various chemicals; ability to withstand confined spaces and perform work safely.

PHYSICAL DEMAND CLASS:
Heavy
  • 100 pounds maximum lifting.
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
  • Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of medium work.
  • Physical agility is required in climbing, bending, and reaching.
  • Required to have clear vision at near distances and at distances of 20 feet or more.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Require regular exposure to moving machinery, dirt, noise, adverse weather conditions, and hazardous materials.Employment Type: Full-time
