The City of San Marino is hiring ten part-time Water Safety Instructors to work in our Community Services Department. The Community Services Department is responsible for enriching the community through creative recreational programs, services and events, as well as the promotion of reading and learning activities through the Crowell Public Library.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under supervision of the Pool Supervisor, the Lifeguard and WSI is responsible for the safety and well being of the swimmers at the San Marino High School swimming pool.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a seasonal position serving in a dual role: While working as a Lifeguard, this position enforces swimming pool rules and regulations; patrols swimming pool areas; corrects unsafe practices; assists swimmers in distress; performs CPR and first aid as required; cleans-up and maintains facility and swimming pool area. While performing the duties of WSI, this position teaches all levels of instructional swim program, including small groups and private instruction; enforces swimming pool rules and regulations; patrols swimming pool areas; corrects unsafe practices; assists swimmers in distress; performs CPR and first aid as required; cleans-up and maintains facility and swimming pool area.
Essential Functions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Duties:
  • Works shifts as a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor and adheres to the expectations of both positions; maintain constant surveillance and visually scan assigned area of responsibility every 10 seconds; walks the area to monitor activities, provides instructions, and prevents accidents.
  • Provides general information on pool operations to swimmers; cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards, enforces pool rules and regulations; responds to all illness and injury incidents around the entire pool facility immediately and appropriately.
  • Rescues swimmers in danger of drowning, performs lifeguarding skills, first aid, CPR and other actions until arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Maintains a clean, safe and orderly pool, deck, aquatics office, and locker rooms; inspect facilities regularly and reports any unsafe conditions/equipment to supervisor or pool manager immediately; performs pool chemical checks at designated times.
  • Keep accurate records of pool usage, chemical levels, pool closures, and attends and participates in all mandatory staff meetings and trainings; promotes aquatic programming.
  • Holds productive and engaging swim lesson sessions; sets up and cleans up lesson station; maintain accurate and timely records of all lessons taught, purchased, and scheduled; maintains open communication with clients and clients' family about the progression of the lessons and future goals; communicates openly and regularly with supervisor and team members.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of
  • Principles and techniques of Water Safety, lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid.

Skills/Abilities
  • React calmly and effectively in emergency situations; think quickly and make appropriate decisions.
  • Swim 300 yards non-stop; tread water for two (2) minutes without hands; back-boarding skills.
  • Maintain personal physical endurance and agility necessary to perform job functions.
  • Lift a person off the bottom of the pool and out of the water; perform all skills required of a lifeguard, perform first aid, and CPR.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; take direction and provide instructions, both orally and in writing; understand and carry out oral and written instructions..
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, staff, school district personnel and those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Flexibility to work some nights and weekends.
  • Teach Water Safety and recreation classes

Education and Experience:
Must be at least 16 years of age. Candidates under 18 years of age and enrolled in high school must obtain and submit valid work permit prior to starting employment.
Education
  • Possess and maintain current American Red Cross certification in Lifeguard Training, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certificate, CPR for the professional rescuer, and First Aid.

Experience
  • Previous lifeguard experience is desirable but not required.

  • Valid American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate
  • Valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate
  • Valid American Red Cross First Aid Certificate
  • Valid American Red Cross C.P.R. Certificate

While performing the duties of this job the employee is subjected to outdoor weather conditions with little to no temperature control; is routinely exposed to the sun, may be exposed to extreme heat, cold, wind, and rain. Retirement
Employees are enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement System (PARS) of the State of California. The City pays 3.75% and the employee pays 3.75% of contributions. Employees are required to participate in the Medicare program and contribute 1.45% of their salary to the program.The City does not participate in Social Security.
