Role Summary/Purpose:

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Operate. remote monitor, and maintain Waste Water Treatment facility to assure discharge of acceptable federal, state and local standards and provide all hazardous waste containment and control.

FACILITIES: Waste Water Treatment facilities including pumps, grit-handling machinery, flocculators, clarities, sludge thickeners, oil skimming equipment, tilter presses, abcore unit and boiler horse; chemical analysis, mixing and feed systems; metering and monitoring systems; automotive and industrial vehicles: Hazardous waste spill trailer and apparatus, oil and coolant facility, landfill site, storage areas, treatment facilities, cranes, pumps, PH tapes and meters, State and Federal regulations, records, respirators, protective clothing, ordinary hand tools, etc..

MATERIALS: Hazardous and non-hazardous solid and liquid waste materials such as varnishes, solvents, thinners, acids, caustics, etc., steam, water, compressed air, lube oils, grease, chemicals, cleaning solutions, sludge, fuel oil, rubbish, refuse, till dirt, labels, bores, mallets, ordinary hand tools, etc.

DIRECTION EXERCISED: May occasionally direct other workers.

WORKING PROCEDURE: Secure job assignment and minimum instruction for diverse work using complicated facilities and diverse material. Interpret sequence of operations. Use tools, facilities and accumulate material.                                                                                                                       ·

Working from standard wastewater treatment practices, written and verbal instructions, etc., operate waste water treatment and waste storage facilities mix and feed water treatment chemicals; operate grit removal equipment, mixes, flocculators, coagulators, oil and sludge skimmers, sludge pumps, industrial waste and storm pumps, sludge thickeners, filter presses, abcore unit, boiler house, etc.  Perform chemical analysis and calculate amounts of chemicals required to maintain correct water discharge specifications. Weigh and mix chemicals and adjust feed rates. Pump and decant sludge and scum. Respond to and take corrective action for alarms within WastewaterTreatment Plant and divert initial emergency spill response until supervision arrives. Recommend extent to which Emergency Spill Response Procedure should be implemented.

Schedule and pick up hazardous and waste materials. Coordinate plant disposal practices and schedule shipments with outside disposal facilities and waste transporters. Inventory, classify, segregate, package and dispose of waste chemicals in accordance with Federal and State regulations. Operate and maintain neutralization and resource recovery equipment and all environmentally related equipment for detoxification of chemical waste. Record data and maintain proper date and records as required. Inspect, lubricate and clean all equipment and perform minor maintenance tasks, change charts, receive and store chemicals. Hazardous Waste Control requires successful completion of training requirements. Perform lower rated work as required. Stow away tools, facilities, etc.

  • Perform the above operations to close tolerances and requirements within the ordinary limits of the capabilities of the facilities in producing acceptable water discharge.
  • Perform all functions of confined space entry, supervisor, attendant, and entrant.
  • Keep facilities, material and work area orderly exercising care in their use, maintaining general housekeeping practices and conforming to all safety and quality requirements

  • appropriate containers, movement to storage areas) In accordance with 6NYCRR Part 373-3.l(g).

Qualifications/Requirements:

AAS/AOS degree in Utilities Technology, Environmental Science, Construction Technology, Chemistry, or Engineering

Or

NYS Certified Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

Or

Minimum Requirement

High school diploma or equivalent with 3 yrs. work experience in Wastewater Treatment Plant operations and/or hazardous material handling
