Description
This position is responsible for the mechanical repair and maintenance of sewer Lift Stations. An incumbent in this position may be designated "Lift Station Mechanic A", "Lift Station Mechanic B", "Lift Station Mechanic C", or "Lift Station Mechanic Trainee."
Examples of Duties
- Performs daily inspections of Lift Stations and performs regular maintenance and testing procedures; cleans and repairs Lift Stations.
- Responds to emergency and trouble calls when on-call.
- Pulls and replaces pumps.
- Repairs and replaces pipes, valves, and fittings.
- Makes repairs to pump station electrical and other control systems.
- Cleans sewage spills and applies chemicals in accordance with state regulations.
- Maintains stock of frequently used parts and supplies on truck.
- Transport and install generators and trailer-mounted pumps as needed.
- Cuts grass and maintains Lift Station grounds.
- Tests alarm systems at Lift Stations.
- Records pump readings and maintain logs.
- Samples, analyzes, and maintains records for odorous gases at Lift Stations.
- Operates a boom truck to pull pumps at Lift Stations.
- Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of Lift Station inspection, repair, and maintenance principles.
- Knowledge of the hazards inherent to sewer maintenance work and the safety measures used to mitigate those hazards.
- Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the maintenance of Lift Station equipment.
- Knowledge of the SCADA system.
- Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
- Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
- Skill in the use of Lift Station maintenance tools and equipment.
- Skill in the preparation of clear and precise reports.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Knowledge of confined space entry procedures; or complete training course within six (6) months of employment.
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Trainee - Must have graduated from standard high school or have GED equivalency certificate; some experience in mechanical or pumping systems is preferred.
- Mechanic C - Must have graduated from standard high school, or have GED equivalency certificate; one (1) year of experience with Wastewater Lift Stations; must possess a Class "C" Wastewater Certification issued by FW&PCOA or Class "C" Certification issued by the State of Florida DEP.
- Mechanic B - Must have graduated from standard high school, or have GED equivalency certificate; three (3) years of experience with Wastewater Lift Stations; must possess a Class "B" Wastewater Certification issued by FW&PCOA or Class "B" Certification issued by the State of Florida DEP.
- Mechanic A - Must have graduated from standard high school, or have GED equivalency certificate; five (5) years of experience with Wastewater Lift Stations; must possess a Class "A" Wastewater Certification issued by FW&PCOA or Class "A" Certification issued by the State of Florida DEP.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Lift Station Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include relevant government regulations, OSHA and other safety regulations, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related mechanical and other technical duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to participate in the repair and maintenance of Wastewater Lift Stations. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of agency operations.

- Contacts are typically with co?workers, other city personnel, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and dangerous gases. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

PTO Leave: Leave begins accruing immediately; however, cannot be used until three (3) months of service has been completed: The schedule varies slighter for Fire Fighters.

less than 5 years: 152 hours
5 to 9 years: 176 hours
10 to 14 years: 200 hours
15 to 19 years: 224 hours
20 + years: 248 hours
At the end of the year, any unused PTO leave will be placed in your PTO bank (up to 380 total hours). Time will be accrued bi-weekly & shown on each paycheck. After the 380 hours are filled, any unused PTO leave will be lost and cannot be used the following year.
RETIREMENT: General employees are fully vested after 10 years of employment. Employees can become partially vested at five (5) years of service. Partial vesting at five (5) years is 50%, six (6) years 60%, seven (7) years 70%, eight (8) years 80%, and nine (9) years 90%. General Employees are eligible for normal retirement upon the earlier of reaching age 55 and the completion of 10 years of credited service or reaching age 50 and the completion of 20 years of credited service.
