The Specialty Minerals (SMI) segment produces and sells the synthetic mineral product precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), mines mineral ores and processes and sells natural mineral products, primarily limestone and talc. This segment's products are used principally in the paper, building materials, paint and coatings, glass, ceramic, polymer, food, automotive and pharmaceutical industries.

MTI Business Segment: Specialty Minerals

Position: Packaging Manager

Location: USA | Adams, Massachusetts


 

The Packaging Manager will provide leadership for overall operation of a the GCC and PCC Packaging value stream. Ensure a safe work environment, drive quality improvements, provide premier customer service, develop a technically qualified work force, reduce operating costs, inventories, and lead times through continuous improvements. Oversee day-to-day activities to meet daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly expectations. The Packaging Manager will partner with customer service and sales team in addition to global supply chain planning and driving Lean principles.

 

 

This is considered a safety sensitive position therefore will be subject to random drug testing as required.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The Packaging Manager is responsible for providing direction and leadership to GCC and PCC Packaging teams, carrying out functions related to safety, quality, and production. The Packaging Manager is partnered with customer service and sales team, coordinating lead times, prioritizing with the sales team on all shipments, driving commitment to customer requirements. Working directly with maintenance planners, providing equipment availability for PM.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate the execution of manufacturing operations and schedules based on sales requirements.
  • Partnership with Customer Service and Sales team, communicating schedules and adherence to schedules
  • Assess talent, recruit and hire new team members that both enhance the team overall match the needs.
  • Support, lead and participate with EHS, Quality, and Engineering
  • Work closely with internal customers to manage delivery expectations managing external supplier relationships
  • Provides input in development of strategic manufacturing plans to achieve company objectives
  • Ensures that departmental and support personnel are focused on continuous improvement and supports lean culture of products and processes
  • Enforce, promote, monitor, and develop a safe work environment ensuring compliance with all environments, health and safety policies. Implement safety and quality policies and standards and attain established goals
  • Assist with shop processes as required (test, troubleshoot)
  • Provide leadership and engage employees in the business through use LEAN principles
  • Lead the day-to-day management of people and process.
  • Using daily management metrics and control charts, conduct fact-based analysis of current state.
  • Creates a work environment where employees are energized, excited and motivated to continuously improve process, delight our customers and accomplish both individual and team goals and objectives
  • Develop, implement, and sustain Standard work / practices.
  • Standard Work adherence
  • Responsible for the communication of daily performance using visual management and maintaining production board. Root Cause problem identification and accountability/corrective actions and other pertinent information
  • Develops and implements integrated departmental plans to ensure business, technical and customer requirements are achieved
  • Lead area 5S program to ensure that housekeeping GMP and safety issues and Food safety non compliances are resolved in a timely and systematic manner

OE/Lean

  • Actively participates in the implementation of sustainable improvement processes, such as 5S, Kaizen, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Daily Management Control, Standard Work and Problem Solving.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Managing supply of raw materials within lead times
  • Participation is all audits

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Management or related field.


 


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Must have knowledge of the English language, Microsoft office applications, and Oracle.


 


Work Hours: The schedule is typically the day shift. However, employee must have ability to work the shift/number of hours in which duties need to be accomplished, including overtime, holidays and weekends, as necessary.


 


Travel: Travel may occur on an infrequent basis.


 


Working Conditions: 



  • While performing the duties of this job, an employee is typically required to have the ability to exert physical strength, coordinate movements, use repetitive motions, have the ability to operate mobile equipment, regularly stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, reach, crouch, kneel, lift, twist, push and pull throughout a work shift, work in confined spaces, have manual dexterity, lift materials weighing up to and including 50 pounds, select and use appropriate equipment/tools to accomplish job duties, read, write, listen, speak and understand English, follow all instructions and other oral/written information, visually inspect equipment/work area, complete paperwork and other documentation accurately, identify, analyze, troubleshoot and solve issues using judgment, react quickly as needed, be organized and detail oriented, be able to identify/judge the urgency of a situation, use judgment in decision making, communicate effectively with others, be aware of oneself in relation to surrounding equipment, work independently and as a team with others. Ability to instruct/transfer job information/knowledge to others.

  • There is exposure to plant production areas, which may include exposure to outside weather conditions as well as loud noise from equipment and dust from production processes. Exposure to plant areas requires the use of appropriate safety equipment. Personal protective equipment is available for employee use in these circumstances.

  • The employee is expected to be self-directed, take initiative and be persistent when appropriate to accomplish necessary duties and keep busy without prompting. Additionally, the employee is expected to be adaptable/flexible to changing work assignments, have a high level of integrity, dependability and self control to maintain composure, perform multiple tasks at once, learn and memorize procedures, manage time effectively and efficiently, meet established deadlines, display a cooperative attitude, read, understand and follow all company, job specific and safety policies/procedures, and attend/use all required training. Ability to travel is preferred.


 


Safety Training: A new employee hired to perform the duties of this position is to be provided New Employee Training from a qualified individual, which consists of classroom training and may include a tour of plant area(s). Additional refresher safety training will be required as management deems appropriate and/or as dictated by MSHA regulations.
