Job description

Sorts corrugated boxes by size, type and condition, backfills ad lift truck operator and performs various other functions within the warehouse.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Segregates boxes in the sorting area, according to size type and condition and places in the designed stacks (bales).
  • Identifies and discards inferior or defective boxes and pits them in the baler for recycling.
  • Discards other foreign materials and removes dangling tape from used cartons.
  • Creates bales of boxes from carts and moves carts to the banding area. Bands and trims tape from good boxes as needed.
  • Counts and labels bales with the correct descriptive tag and quantity.
  • Prepares bales of boxes for storage or shipment.
  • Successfully operates a power industrial forklift by moving levers, pressing pedals, and controlling lifting apparatus.
  • Perform daily forklift inspections and follow forklift operating guidelines.
  • Loads and unloads trailers with a fork truck, placing bundles and/or pallets of boxes on the sorting conveyor or moving boxes from the staging area to the sorting area as needed.
  • Inventories completed bales of boxes from the staging area to the sorting and/or production area. Places bales onto pallets and records placement in the warehouse storage area on inbound inventory sheets.
  • Inventories items received as finished goods by attaching identifying tags and records placement in warehouse storage areas on inbound inventory sheets. May require counting and measuring items to correctly identify what is received.
  • Moves and organizes items to maintain efficient storage areas and records inventory movement on appropriate forms for inventory control.
  • Pulls samples of inventoried items as needed by customer service for our customers.
  • Pulls proper items identified on Picking Tickets to be shipped, loads the items onto semi trailers, box trucks or flatbeds for deliveries or pre stages orders where Picking Tickets are marked as being delivered by Common Carrier or Customer Pickup. Documents the items pulled on the Picking Ticket and completes quantity shipped on the Delivery Ticket.
  • When loading trailers for multiple stop loads, load the items in reverse order of the drivers stops, identifying every stop with color-coded labels and attach labels of the same color to the customers paperwork.
  • Weighs materials or products such as outbound common carriers loads and inbound scrap. Records weight on the appropriate paperwork.
  • Sweep out empty trailers and report any damage to the ceiling, sidewalls, and/or floor to the warehouse supervisor.
  • Inspect the ceiling, sidewalls, and floor for damage before loading or unloading any trailer from an outside carrier. Notify the driver and the warehouse supervisor or any preexisting damage.
  • Replaces forklift propane tan as needed.
  • Performs cleanup or sorting areas at the end of the shift or as required.
  • Performs cleanup of the shipping and receiving areas at the end of the shift or as required.
  • Performs all duties following United Container's safety manual.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, and must be able to reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must regularly lift and or move up to 50 pounds.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1-2 years of related experience working in similar industry is preferred; additional education may be substituted for years of work experience.
  • Powered Industrial Forklift Truck License (we will train and provide certification). Prior license/certification is highly preferred.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly required to talk and/or hear to communicate with co-workers and/or truck drivers.
  • Manual dexterity is required for operating machinery.
  • Frequently required to bend, twist, turn, kneel, and/or squat.
  • Frequently required to stand and/or walk on the concrete warehouse floor.
  • Frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Frequently required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions and tolerate exposure to typical noises and smells associated with a warehouse.
  • Safety equipment (PPE) includes but is not limited to a hi-vis safety vest, gloves, and utility knife.
