Responsibilities
The Vice President and General Manager will assume responsibility for the growth and profitability of the ~$80 million Federal Equipment Company business. This leader will have an opportunity to further expand the portfolio through new product development and commercialization of ideas that can have a dramatic impact on the Navy/Marine and Industrial Processing markets. This role will ensure that the Federal Equipment Company business maintains a successful brand reputation in the market and grows in a profitable manner that aligns with the business's long term growth objectives.
He/she will drive commercial excellence and maintain a structured business operating process that leads to growth through marketing differentiated, sustainable elevator, door, crane and conveyance system products. The second initiative of this role is the management of a focused new product development process. This leader should be capable of engaging with customers and directly communicating market needs to engineering teams through a guided system that ensures thoughtful idea generation. Innovation is critical to this business's success, as is leveraging an 80/20 mindset towards product and market differentiation. This role holds full P&L accountability and is expected to spend time directly with customers and develop a world class commercial team while building an empowering culture. Federal Equipment Company is a profitable business with untapped potential to further elevate its presence in the market through strategic new product development and commercial excellence. The business is in a strong position and could greatly benefit from the implementation of a structured operating process, performance evaluation metrics, and commercial excellence programs. Fairbanks Morse Defense maintains a high standard of excellence and would expect that Federal Equipment Company produces at the same level.
Specific responsibilities will include but not limited:
  • Develop and implement a profitable growth strategy for the business. Create long and short-term strategies and commercial business plans to drive revenue expansion and market growth;
  • Drive new product development activities as they relate to ongoing trends in the marketplace, creating an innovation pipeline for the business;
  • Foster a culture of acting with integrity, inclusion, transparency, accountability, and performance with a high sense of urgency;
  • Manage a team across all commercial, operations, engineering, finance, and HR functions to deliver the revenue and profit results in accordance with the overall business objectives.
  • Use an 80/20 approach to manage the operations and innovation processes and implement cost controls and budgetary oversights to ensure that profits/EBITDA and cash-flow goals are achieved;
  • Lead the team in developing ways to measure operational performance and track improvements (i.e. champion lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles) throughout the business;
  • Drive and further develop the strategy for the business and lead execution in order to profitably grow the business both organically and through M&A;
  • Maintain a close pulse on market trends and direct a team to fully exploit growth opportunities;
  • Communicate effectively inside and outside the business to drive strong teamwork and collaboration. Also, develop a strong sales team to sell based on "value and technology";
  • Actively manage internal talent development to attract, educate, and retain talent within the business to ensure the competency level of all employees is sufficient to be fully effective in their roles.

Professional Experiences & Qualities
The ideal candidate will be a dynamic and successful industrial leader who has demonstrated the ability to manage a P&L and position a business for long term success. This individual will have a history of profitable growth and extensive experience in managing sales revenue plans and operating expenses as a key business leader.
The ideal candidate should also possess, at minimum, the following qualifications and attributes:
  • Strong influencing skills in managing a cross-functional staff and aligning teams towards a collective growth agenda;
  • Experience developing and executing strategic and commercial business plans;
  • Significant career experience in an industrial manufacturing environment selling into diverse end markets
  • Demonstrated ability to make quality and timely decisions;
  • Has worked in less developed businesses where success depended on creating the path forward versus following the process;
  • Strong commercial experience and background;
  • A combination of strong business/manufacturing acumen, technical skills and experience managing a business with a concentrated customer base;
  • Creates and thrives in a continuous improvement environment; finds things to do/drive impact - never satisfied with what can be achieved (in a good way);
  • Persistent in their focus on results and execution;
  • Creates followership in the organization - wins the hearts and minds of colleagues by establishing "like and trust" with the team.
