The mission of the Food Bank of Delaware is to provide nutritious foods to Delawareans in need and facilitate long-term solutions to the problems of hunger and poverty through community education and advocacy.
The Food Bank’s team is dedicated to building community awareness and creating an efficient food distribution network to eliminate hunger in Delaware. Over the last 40 years, the Food Bank has expanded its scope of services building on partnerships with hunger-relief organizations while at the same time bringing new programs and services to alleviate hunger and provide education and training. With locations in both Newark and Milford, the Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, will continue to expand and extend its programs and services to communities in its quest to create a community free of hunger.
Position Summary
As the Volunteer Coordinator, you will oversee the day-to-day (and shift-based) work of all volunteers who support initiatives and efforts in the Healthy Pantry Center, the Farm, the Development department, culinary programs and other areas as needed. This role will acquaint volunteers with practices and tasks associated with supporting the above programs and will assist with tracking, monitoring and reporting as needed. This is a safety sensitive position.
Major Responsibilities and Essential Functions
- Assists the Volunteer Program Director in recruiting volunteers to assist in all Food Bank activities requiring volunteer support
- Trains volunteers to assist in Food Bank activities using clear and simple instructions and provides hands-on daily supervision of volunteers
- Ensures volunteers’ adherence to all policies and procedures. Informs volunteers on issues related to hunger and actively markets FBD programs to further community involvement
- Ensure volunteers feel appreciated and are productive during their shift
- Supports the planning and execution of special events that involve volunteers
- Operates within the network of Volunteer Coordinators
- Responsible for the upkeep of volunteer room and oversees all activities associated with meal boxes
- Safely operates warehouse equipment when necessary
- Upon request provides development staff with grant support (including writing) regarding volunteer data
- Provides development staff with accurate and timely volunteer information
- Coordinates volunteer activities with respect to key distribution programs
- Assists in supervising the Volunteer Interns and Summer Youth Workers
- Assists with coordinating individuals reporting for community service and maintaining appropriate paperwork for hours served
- Assisting with overall program support as needed
Qualities and Experience
- 4-year degree or equivalent work experience in a related field
- Valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation
- Able to work evenings and some weekends as needed
- Extremely organized and familiar with routine professional functions, including written and verbal communications, listening skills, and the ability to multi-task
- Ability to work independently, problem solve, and think and act strategically while working towards the Food Bank’s vision of a community free from hunger
- Professional appearance and demeanor is a requirement while interacting with a diverse array of volunteers, community supporters, potential supporters, clients, hunger relief partners, elected officials and other dignitaries
- Demonstrated ability to establish a working relationship with employees, Hunger Relief Partners and the public
- Demonstrated knowledge of community resources relating to volunteering
- Computer literacy, data entry, and familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite of applications
- Willingness to learn how to operate appropriate warehouse equipment
Competencies
- Works directly with volunteers and the general public in an effort to achieve the Food Bank's mission
- Interfaces with multiple members of staff to assure the appropriate level of volunteer support needed programmatically
- Understanding of social service systems and anti-hunger programs
Physical Requirements
- Comfortable working in a warehouse environment
- Comfortable working in extreme hot or cold temperatures
- Must be able to lift and move 50 lbs. frequently
- Must be able to pull in excess of 1000 lbs. on pallet jack
- Must be comfortable working with large groups of people
- Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts
- Must be comfortable in a loud work environment
