1.High-Level VM Inventory

a.Will need input from UMES staff

i.Group resources in the provided RVTools dump by application

ii.Describe the function of the application / VM

iii.Determine relationship between VMs in each application group

iv.Determine Installed software on each VM including version information if available

v.Determine whether application / VM will be rebuilt or migrated as-is

Initial Cleanup

1.90 VM snapshots dating back to 02/2021 – May be affecting performance and storage

a.Determine which process created the snapshot (Unitrends, Cohesity, manual, etc.)

b.Determine if there are proxy servers that have temporary snapshot disks related to backups mounted

i.If yes – Assuming the backups completed, remove disks from the proxy servers

c.Delete the snapshots

2.130 VMs have CD drives connected – May affect VMotion and other operations

a.Determine whether files on attached CD drives are in use (via script)

b.Unmount drive if no files are in use

c.From VSphere – Disconnect the drive and select client device

3.340 unregistered / detached “zombie” VMDK files consuming storage and affecting storage utilization (4 hours if all the disks are deleted with no assessment. Longer depending on the amount of individual assessment per disk (estimated 30 minutes per disk)

a.Option 1. Delete all with no review.

b.Option 2. Some file system review needed.

i.Determine age of files based on timestamp

ii.Attach to a test VM and dump file system to a CSV for UMES to review / browse data to determine whether necessary (requires UMES input)

iii.Delete as necessary

4.Resize approximately 20 virtual disks

a.Assess datastore capacity

b.Resize virtual disk to a minimum of 10% free

c.Resize partition. Possible downtime if older system volume

5.Virtual Machine CPU/Core count

a.Review vSphere hosts with CPU/Core count greater than 4:1

b.Migrate VMs to other vSphere host

c.Reduce VM CPU count where possible.
