Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNC Greensboro enriches the lives of diverse individuals and connects multiple communities, both on and off campus, by presenting, interpreting, and collecting modern and contemporary art. In recognizing its paramount role in public service, the Weatherspoon fosters an appreciation of the ability of art to positively impact lives. WAM is internationally known for its collections of American paintings, sculptures, and works on paper and for its exhibitions that help broaden the story of American art to be more inclusive of women and artists of color. History The Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNC Greensboro was founded by Gregory Ivy in 1941 and is the earliest of any art facilities within the UNC system.
Through a lively annual calendar of exhibitions and a multidisciplinary educational program for audiences of all ages, the museum provides an opportunity for visitors to consider artistic, cultural, and social issues of our time— enriching the life of our university, community, and region.

Position Summary:

Ensures that all museum visitors have a positive experience while maintaining a safe and secure environment and protecting the museum’s collection and loans. This includes answering questions, enforcing rules, looking out for suspicious behavior, providing assistance, and engaging visitors about works of art, museum programs, and how to support the museum. Supports the director in developing a vibrant and engaged community by promoting the museum’s strategic framework and goals
This is a temporary position, with a 11month renewal period

Minimum Qualifications:

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENCY AND DEMONSTRATED POSSESSION OF THE COMPETENCIES NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE WORK.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least two (2) years of previous experience in customer service with a security background.
  • Should have a genuine interest in communicating with members of the public and campus community, and assisting visitors.
  • Should have basic computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office products.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

  • Monitor all museum visitors and ensure they adhere to museum protocols and policies.
  • Keep logs, security checklists, and art inventories daily.
  • Become thoroughly knowledgeable of the museum facility, CCTV, intrusion, life safety, and HVAC /mechanical systems.
  • Able to stand/walk constantly throughout the day and regularly interact with the public.
  • Should exhibit sound judgment and the ability to calmly and quickly take initiative in emergency situations.
  • Flexibility to work on a rotating on-call basis during evening hours and in case of systems failure.
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse and equitable working environment and to serving the needs of the campus and community.
