The Visitor Center at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is seeking a creative and dependable Visitor Centerand School Programs Temporary Assistant to help with our daily operations and programs. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is a world leader in the study, appreciation, and conservation of birds. We are dedicated to engaging a diversity of people in learning about birds and protecting the planet.


The Lab's Visitor Center in Sapsucker Woods offers opportunities for visitors to connect with the Lab and learn about its mission to interpret and conserve the earth's biological diversity. Additionally, the Visitor Center offers a suite of virtual programs including paid workshops, informal webinars, and family-oriented programs. The Visitor Center at the Lab is also home to the Adelson Library, a unit of the Cornell University Library system.


As a partner site of the Discovery Trail, the Lab's Visitor Center hosts field trips from local elementary schools through the Kids Discover the Trail! (KDT) initiative. Under the guidance of Lab staff and volunteer docents, teams of fifth-grade students conduct biodiversity surveys and collect data along the trails in the four habitats of Sapsucker Woods Preserve. Students also explore related concepts through hands-on activity stations around the Visitor Center.

The Visitor Center and School Programs Assistant will work to support our public-facing efforts.


Visitor Center and Adelson Library duties:

  • Be a welcomingpresence in the Visitor Center by greeting, assisting, answeringquestions, and providingresourcessuch as binoculars,field guides,andeducationalmaterials to visitors
  • Staff the Adelson Library by fulfilling book requests, shelving, scanning, and other tasks as needed
  • Conduct open and closing procedures for the Visitor Center and Adelson Library

School Programs duties:

  • Oversee with set up and clean-up of program materials before and after each program.
  • Lead large-group activities including welcoming and orienting classes, handing out or collecting program materials, and getting groups settled for lunch.
  • Lead teams of up to 10 students and 1-2 teachers / chaperones in small group activities, including hikes in Sapsucker Woods, biodiversity survey data collection, birdwatching and listening stations, and demonstrations of sound analysis software.
  • Facilitate activities in a fun, engaging and interactive manner, empowering students to practice skills for themselves, while also keeping the group on task and on time.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in adapting to changing conditions, in response to inclement weather, COVID-19 safety measures, late school bus arrivals, etc.

This position is an exciting opportunity for those interested in informal and environmental education from a wide range of backgrounds.


This 6-month (Feb - July/August) position will work a flexible schedule, covering 10-19 hours/week, on weekdays and some weekends between the hours of 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The schedule of possible shifts is based on needed coverage at the Visitor Center Front Desk and in the Adelson Library, in addition to training and preparation time needed for Kids Discover the Trail. Some of those planning and preparation hours can be done remotely. The KDT program has a short, but intensive season with in-person programs taking place most weekdays throughout May and early June between 8:30 a.m. -2 p.m. These program dates are pre-scheduled, although you are not required to lead programs on every date.


Pay is $18.00/hour. There is a TCAT bus stop in front of the building and free ample parking is also available.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong interest in birds and birding * Familiarity with the Merlin Bird ID mobile app * Familiarity with local ecology and species identification of trees, plants and wildlife common to Sapsucker Woods * Interest in or familiarity with citizen science projects
