Job description

The Department of English at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County seeks a full-time
Visiting Lecturer for a one-year appointment, beginning August 19, 2024. The Visiting
Lecturer appointment is renewable for up to three years. The candidate will teach a 4:4 load
in first-year composition, as scheduled by the Writing and Rhetoric Division (WARD), a unit
within the English department. Currently, WARD classes are taught through the in-person
course modality.
First-year composition at UMBC (ENGL 100) is a required one-semester course in critical
thinking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on integrating academic research and
documentation. Students read and produce written work for a variety of purposes and
audiences and focus on strategies for researching, organizing, drafting, sharing, and
revising.

Qualifications
Candidates should have an M.A. or PH. D in English, Composition and Rhetoric, or any allied
field, with experience in teaching first-year composition. Preferred candidates would also
have experience in teaching technical communication or speech.
