POSITION TITLE: Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics
REPORTS TO: Math & Science Division Chair, Dr. Katy Everett
POSITION SUMMARY: The Division of Science and Mathematics at Eureka College invites applications for one Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) of Mathematics with a focus in applied mathematics and/or data science beginning on August 12, 2024. The successful candidate will teach 24 credits annually, along with assisting in advising computer science and math majors and occasionally mentoring senior thesis projects as part of the college’s Honors Program. The successful candidate may be required to participate in the college’s interdisciplinary programs including first year seminar and help to develop a Data Science program at Eureka College. This position has the potential to become tenure track after year one.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Teach 12 credit hours each semester (24 credits per academic year) of undergraduate coursework in mathematics.
Courses in 2024-25 academic year may include:
- Precalculus
- Calculus with Analytic Geometry 1 & 2
- Discrete Mathematics
- Linear Algebra
- Probability & Statistics
- Abstract Algebra
Future courses if position is extended beyond the visiting year could include and/or introduce:
- College Algebra
- Differential Equations
- Geometry
- Real Analysis
- Intro to Data Science
- Statistical Theory and Methods
- Data Structures and Algorithms
- Data Science with Python and/or R (course series
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Help introduce Data Science major at the college
- Serve on college committees
- Participate in faculty governance (monthly meetings)
- Supervise undergraduate honors theses & research (as needed)

EDUCATION
Essential: PhD in Pure or Applied Mathematics or Data Science
(or a closely related field) preferred. MS applications will also be considered.
Desirable: Knowledge or computer programming, data science and/or statistics

WORK SCHEDULE: Normal workday is Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM including one hour allocated for lunch. Flexibility in the work schedule is required to accommodate occasional evening and weekend hours, including attendance in December and May Commencements.
