Description
Under general supervision, the Vision and Hearing Technicianis responsible for planning and implementing processes and methodologies required for providing Vision and Hearing screenings in Detroit Head Starts, daycares, schools, and community-based organizations that have age-appropriate children, refer individuals with failed test results for follow up, attend state mandated meetings and trainings, provide group talks on hearing and vision screening programs.
Examples of Duties
  • Successful completion of MDHHS Vision and Hearing trainings is required
  • Provide an appropriate number of comprehensive Vision and Hearing screenings in preschools, daycares, and schools
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate screening services with school staff
  • Refer appropriately individuals who have failed their screenings
  • Submit accurate screening paperwork (name lists, summaries, audiograms, vision referral cards, etc.)
  • Submits paperwork/assignments on time
  • Maintain proper care of office and screening equipment
  • Obtain and input health insurance information
  • Knowledge of hearing, speech and language development
  • Ability to work well with clients from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and standard office equipment
  • Completion of emergency preparedness training (to include, but not limited to FEMA IS Courses 100, 200, 700 and 800) within 90 days of hire is required for this position
  • Participation in emergency preparedness exercises is required for this position
  • Response during a public health emergency event is required for this position
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications (required):
Bachelor's degree in the social sciences, education, psychology, guidance and counseling or related field.
One (1) year of recent experience as a supervisor, preferably in a social, economic or community development program.
Three (3) years of experience in case work, group work, individual and group counseling and guidance, social research or community or public relations.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirement of this position.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS
City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
- At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or
- At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
• In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);
- An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;
• Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
