Job description

Purpose and Scope
The position of the MVAHS Life Coach is to support students in successful completion of their academic goals by helping them to navigate personal challenges. Life Coaches are assigned at orientation and follow the student throughout their tenure at Memphis Virtual Adult High School. The position is responsible for conducting student needs assessments, providing individual and group counseling, working as a team member to ensure optimal academic and social achievement for students, maintaining case files, and performing related work as required.
Essential Job Functions
  1. Assists students in planning and executing post-secondary action plans consistent with their abilities and interests (including assistance with financial aid, applications, prerequisites, etc.).
  2. Provides guidance to students and instructors in resolving issues that arise related to progress towards academic goals, persistence, and attendance from high school upperclassmen to functioning early college participates.
  3. Coordinates student referrals for services to help overcome social and economic barriers; follows up on student transition to postsecondary education and career goals.
  4. Works collaboratively with College and Career Counselors to assist students with setting goals and identifying, planning for, and overcoming potential obstacles and defining steps in education and career planning; builds rapport and trust with students to support successful goal completion; monitors student progress toward goals; conducts follow up with program participants; offers advisement as needed supports instructors and program efforts to infuse instruction with persistence and success strategies.
  5. Work collaboratively with Community Engagement Advisors and local mentoring programs to connect individual students with mentors and career opportunities.
  6. Monitors each student's progress toward educational/career goals and meets quarterly to review the progress, including conducting home/field visits for students who are non-responsive to contacts.
  7. Assists students in the completion of postsecondary enrollment processes which includes, but not limited to the admission application, course registration, financial aid, and new student orientation registration.
  8. Collects, retrieves, and analyzes student intake information through PowerSchool student information systems. All information must be processed in an official and securely approved manner.
  9. Informs and, if necessary, refers students to other institutional resources when academic, attitudinal, attendance, or other personal problems require intervention by other professionals.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's degree or equivalent, PLUS four (4) years of directly related experience working in education, social work, or case management. (Example: Youth Counselor, Group Counselor, Case Manager, Social Worker, etc.) Any equivalent combination of related education, training, and/or experience totaling six (6) years. Requires state certification in Guidance and Counseling.
(PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED)
Degree Equivalency Formula:
Bachelor's Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.
Master's Degree=6 years plus required years of experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of academic advising and career development principles and practices.
  • Effective communication skills both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to establish a connection with the student who is struggling academically and to help formulate an action plan to maintain satisfactory progress.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment
Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment.
Unavoidable Hazards: The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.
Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
