Job Description
The Vice President, Project Development (VPPD) is an expert in all aspects of the solar renewable project development process, from site acquisition through pre-construction project sale. He or she will oversee the Project Development department, and act as key internal advisor on strategy, best operational practices, and project development capability enhancement. The VPPD will often work in the field representing the company with landowners, local and state politicians, county staff, community associations, and project contractors. Project lifecycle responsibilities will include site identification and acquisition, early-stage engineering, and local and environmental permitting. The VPPD will also advise on research initiatives—including policy, technology, and environmental impacts—and prepare and present permit applications at hearings and meetings.
Reports directly to the CEO
Office is based in Reston, VA - this position is remote with 50-75% travel (boots on ground)
Key attributes: landman, land agent, negotiating land deals, local government permits, community engagement, site acquisition, site control, Solar Land projects, project development through NTP (notice to proceed), interconnection process, public speaking, boots on ground.
Management Responsibilities:
- Must have proven track record in site acquisition / site control for solar farm project development taking projects to NTP (notice to proceed, managing external parties for due diligence efforts, acquiring local county permits and familiar with requirements for state/federal permits.
- Experience and savvy engaging stakeholders (landowners, local politicians, business owners, local community)
- Knowledge of the interconncetion process
- Guide and co-lead company’s Project Development strategy, including developing goals, identifying new markets, developing go-to-market approaches, identifying the required capabilities, and guiding SWOT analyses.
- Lead the Project Development department to include i) managing, motivating, and mentoring team members; and ii) instituting improvements to processes and systems.
- Conduct performance management and goal setting.
- Support the accounting department’s development of project and portfolio budgets.
Project Development Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with our research team in the identification of new projects and evaluate the relative business value of these opportunities.
- Meet with landowners to negotiate and secure real property rights.
- Employ customer relationship management (CRM) and project management tools to plan and manage business development efforts, including tracking milestones and managing budgets.
- Lead the permitting process, including directing the creation of permit applications and related materials, and liaising with local officials, boards, and key stakeholders.
- Collaborate with transmission consultants.
- Client-facing and deal negotiation experience.
- Highly active and influential in the community as it relates to land development and community readiness.
- Strong emotional intelligence and the ability to keep focused under pressure.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and public speaking skills. Comfortable in both one-on-one conversations and speaking in front of large audiences.
- Recognized expert in the fields of project development and solar energy. Able to share knowledge with others in a way that is understandable and relatable.
- Proven success managing projects and people, and meeting deadlines.
- Proven success leading multiple projects through the project lifecycle from site initiation to project completion.
- Ability to travel 50%–75% of the time, often on short notice.
- 5+ years of utility scale solar project development experience required including two years leading a Renewable energy development team.
- Must be thoroughly familiar with project lifecycle from site identification to NTP.
- Experience managing projects with cost-loaded project management software such as Smartsheet.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
In the office, must be able to work at a computer for extended periods of time, requiring sitting, listening, and hearing.
In the field, must be able to move distances over sometimes uneven terrain.
