The Vice President of Training leads the Optum Training organization which provides end-to-end training, communication, content management, client learning, change management and learning that spans domestic and global operations. In complex distributed environment with multiple lines of businesses and products, you will demonstrate knowledge of the business environment and business requirements, collaborate with internal/external business partners using a consultative approach to identify business goals and performance gaps, manage the assessment of performance gaps to drive identification of the business need, identify the root cause of performance gaps and the role of training in addressing them, identify non-training solutions to address business needs/performance gaps, where appropriate, evaluate learner readiness to tailor planning of training solutions, translate business needs into training/development needs, identify/select appropriate training methodologies and communicate to stakeholders in order to drive adoption, and leverage all relevant training/development approaches

The VP will collaborate with leadership to champion training and development as business priorities, develop strategies to help leaders create a working environment conducive to the delivery, application and impact of training, identify and implement practices to measure training impact and help leaders ensure that training is applied on the job, analyze training evaluation data to measure training effectiveness and linkage to job performance.

This role calls for a dynamic Leader capable of managing and communicating complex Training and Learning concepts, considerations, and analyses in an easy to understand, actionable and impactful way. This role will be key in interacting with, collaborating with, and educating individual Optum Business, Operations and Finance Leaders and C-suite executives on Training and Learning capabilities and their impact on Optum's business. Additionally, this role will be responsible for partnering with non-supported organizations to identify growth, expansion, and potential consolidation of new and existing Training capabilities and services.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Identify current and emerging trends in the training industry and activate their benefit to the organization.
  • Maintain knowledge of current and planned technology capabilities in the business.
  • Maintain awareness of a variety of training delivery modes.
  • Maintain knowledge of new/emerging learning techniques/technologies and activate their benefit to the organization.
  • Contribute ideas to influence the adoption of technology solutions that enhance training outcomes in the business.
  • Apply knowledge of core processes to support design/delivery of training solutions.
  • Share best training practices with applicable stakeholders across the business.
  • Drive adoption of training best practices and trends.
  • Leverage appropriate resources to drive the design, development and delivery of training solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with established learning processes/procedures.
  • Ensure utilization of appropriate learning techniques/technologies to optimize learning impact.
  • Drive marketing and communication of available training solutions.
  • Develop overall training plans/calendars to communicate and manage training activities/resources.
  • Identify and address implementation obstacles/issues as they arise.
  • Provide facilitation/support to leadership teams in order to drive achievement of their business goals.
  • Recommend enhancements to our learning processes and systems.
  • Identify and procure training staff and other resources.
  • Develop/manage training budgets.
  • Ensure that training staff understand how training goals align with business strategies.
  • Ensure that training staff adhere to internal processes, procedures and practices.
  • Ensure that training staff have access to required tools and information.
  • Lead instructional designers to ensure that designs meet requirements.
  • Negotiate vendor contracts to support our business goals.
  • Manage vendor relationships and ensure adherence to contract terms.
  • Establish clear lines of communication with all applicable stakeholders, and set appropriate expectations.
  • Manage training projects to ensure proper design, development, implementation and evaluation of training solutions.
  • Partner with global training units to coordinate and integrate activities of global training staff, as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • Ten or more years of experience in complex business operations with direct and matrix relationships
  • Five plus years managing teams
  • Five plus years managing cost and expenses (including knowledge of P&L considerations)
  • Experience with Learning and Training concepts and their application to enhance key metrics like speed to proficiency, learner NPS, and training staff efficiency
  • Experience driving strategic learning solutions and comprehensive talent engagement campaigns
  • Experience researching and adopting learning technology and innovation to evolve the learning capability, enabling efficiency (speed and accessibility) and value (performance benefits).  
  • Proven ability to translate business needs into training/development needs
  • Knowledge of driving an execution orientation
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, presentation, and facilitation skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Experience managing a global workforce

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $188,000 to $357,600 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
