Vice President Of Real Estate/Corporate Counsel

Article Student Living is hiring a VP of Real Estate/Corporate Counsel to join our Student Housing Chicago Headquarters team. You will work with company partners and management teams to draft, review, negotiate, and advise on commercial transactions and help manage outside counsel. During your tenure with our organization, you will understand how decisions on legal matters affect the broader company. The VP of Real Estate/Corporate Counsel will report to the General Counsel and will engage in daily business operations of the company and work with corporate teams across the organization, interact with senior leadership, provide strategic counsel on essential issues and organizational positioning, and be a driver supporting company culture.
You will advise on real estate transactions (acquisitions, dispositions, financings, leasing), commercial contracts, compliance and risk management, litigation management, and corporate governance.
You will be in a hybrid role, working at our home office in the Fulton Market area, 3-5 days per week.
You will travel occasionally, up to 10%.

Your Mission:

• Collaborate with legal and business teams in connection with due diligence and transaction support for financing, investment, and corporate transactions.
• Help implement best practices concerning corporate and property operations, regulatory compliance, and investor reporting.
• Work with legal and executive teams on matters of corporate governance, including board meetings, resolutions, and transaction approvals
• Advise asset and property management teams on residential and commercial landlord-tenant matters; draft leases, amendments, and related documentation; manage outside counsel.
• Be part of the risk-management team, sourcing appropriate insurance products to protect corporate and real estate assets and developing Article’s risk-mitigation strategies.
• Provide advice, support, and training to business teams on matters of legal and regulatory significance, including intellectual property, employment and employee-relations matters, and landlord-tenant matters; draft agreements and policies concerning same.
• Assist on litigation matters; supervise outside counsel.

Your Track Record:

• Law degree from a nationally accredited university
• Admission to at least one state bar (preferably Illinois, New York, or California)
• 4+ years’ general corporate or real estate experience in a large law firm setting or in-house with a mid-sized or large company
