4Roots is a foundation founded by John Rivers, Founder of 4Rivers Restaurant Group—a family-owned restaurant chain in Winter Park, FL. The foundation is dedicated to the restoration of the relationship between community and nature through advanced regenerative farming, innovative science and technology, and an awakening to the symmetry between food and medicine. 4Roots seeks to improve overall health by advancing sustainability, food and farming education, healthcare, economic opportunity, and the arts. The foundation’s key initiative is the development of the 4Roots Farm Campus, which is aimed at alleviating food insecurity, stimulating the economy, and modeling key sustainability initiatives while educating and inspiring the community.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Vice President of Development (VPD) is a full-time hybrid role located in Orlando, FL with limited travel and flexibility for some work from home. The VPD will be responsible for planning and executing budgeting, project management, and philanthropy campaigns. Reporting to the Executive Director, the VPD will also oversee planned and annual giving programs and ensure that fundraising goals are met. The individual must understand how to create an ambitious, comprehensive financial/fundraising strategic plan aligned with the Farm’s overall mission and then monitor the plan through successful implementation. The VPD will directly oversee multi-level Development Department while collaborating with team members to identify and cultivate potential donors, monitor donor records, and maintain stewardship of donor relationships.

Skills & Qualifications

Required:

• 10 years+ Senior Level Planned Giving and Annual Giving experience
• Proven track record in designing and driving comprehensive Development Campaigns in family, corporate, foundation and government sectors
• Effective Team Leader with 10 years + of managing multi-level development department
• Budgeting and Project Management skills
• Passion and experience for sustainability, regenerative farming, health, human and earth science
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Familiarity with donor databases
• Independent worker that excels in unsupervised work and environment to think creatively
• Excellent communication with strong writing, presenting, and interpersonal skills
• Effective speaking/presenting to large groups
• Accustomed to working in a fast paced, evolving, entrepreneurial culture
• A bachelor’s degree in business administration, Marketing, Communications, or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.

Position Functions and Duties

1. Long-term Fundraising Strategy:

• Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan for long-term sustainability, encompassing Farm completion, annual overhead costs, and recurring revenue programs. Establish performance metrics, regularly assess outcomes, and collaborate with Leadership Team and Board for plan effectiveness.
• Engage Board, staff, and leadership in the fund development plan, defining rules and responsibilities.
• Craft and implement a development strategy in support of a 5-Year Strategic Plan.

2. Revenue Generation:

• Collaborate with the Executive Director and team leaders to create and leverage revenue-generating platforms, products, and services.

3. Board Relations and Communications:

• Work alongside the CEO to identify and recruit new Board members.
• Manage Board communications, relations, meeting documentation, and member requirements.

4. Development Team Leadership:

• Build and lead a high-performing development team, focusing on recruitment, development, and retention of subject matter experts.

5. Donor Communications:

• Ensure effective donor communications, maintaining a consistent voice, tone, and engaging, inspiring messaging with a clear impact message.

6. Gift Acquisition:

• Take ownership of lead gift portfolio.
• Establish a team and multi-tiered strategy for securing funding form major gifts to grassroots, organic programs, targeting individuals, foundations, and corporations.

7. Grant Management:

• Direct the grant team to identify, evaluate, secure, and report on local, state, and national grant opportunities.

8. Financial Management:

• Collaborate closely with the Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer to develop and oversee fund development budgets.
• Generate and distribute reports tracking progress and provide strategic adjustments as necessary.
• Ensure the effective utilization of the donor management system to support development goals.

9. Compliance and Ethics:

• Develop and enforce compliance with relevant regulations and laws.
• Maintain accountability standards for donors and adhere to code of ethics principles and professional conduct for fundraising staff.
• Implement policies regarding gift acceptance, confidentiality, acknowledgement, and reconciliation.
• Address potential conflict-of-interest issues and steward endowments effectively.

4 Rivers Smokehouse began with the launch of the “Barbecue Ministry” in 2004, when John hosted a cookout fundraiser to support a local family whose young daughter was battling cancer. This one event resulted in a passion for supporting local schools, churches, and charitable organizations. After trials, tribulations, and a whole lot of burnt ends, we finally flipped that “Hot Brisket Now” sign on in October of 2009. Within the first hour, a line had formed out the door…and then around the corner.
