Seasonal/Variable Position- This position must work less than 1000 hours in a calendar year.
Directly responsible for enforcement of Arizona Revised Statutes 5-105 (A) and Arizona Racing Commission rules and regulations to ensure that collection of samples from racehorses is performed properly and with integrity.
All work, should be performed within Arizona, unless an exception is properly authorized in advance.
- Assist in collection of test samples (blood, urine and hair) from racehorse
- Follow best practices for test barn operations to ensure proper handling of test samples to maintain the chain of custody. Maintain chain of custody records. Package and ship samples securely to test laboratory. Maintain lab area organization and cleanliness.
- Keep veterinary exam records and gather injury risk information for pre-race horse inspections, assist with injury review meetings.
- Enforce Arizona statutes and regulations regarding horse racing and report any violations to State Veterinarian or Stewards.
- Assist state veterinarian with split sample processing.
- Assist investigators with inspections of backside barn facilities for possible violations.
- Notify trainers when horses are placed on the veterinarian's list. Respond to inquiries from trainers, owners and veterinarians regarding proper procedures for regulated activities including medical procedures that require observation.
Knowledge of:
- Arizona racing commission rules and regulations and the applicable Arizona revised statutes governing horse racing.
- Veterinarian's duties.
- Horse track operations.
- Racing animal anatomy.
- How do identify horse racing Animals by the use of National Association registration documents.
- Investigative techniques, procedures, and ability to prepare accurate records.
- How to handle and control excitable horse racing animals.
- Different breeds and racing equipment used in horse racing.
- Horsemanship.
- Adobe Acrobat, G-Suite/Workspace, and Microsoft Office software.
Skills in:
- Identifying horses by registration certificates markings, tattoo, calyx, dimples and other characteristics.
- Proper handling of horse-racing animals. Interpretation of track procedures.
- Continuity of evidence.
- Observation and detecting violations of rules and regulations in Paddock area.
- Presenting a pleasant impression at all times in performing duties and conduct self in the courteous and temperate fashion.
- Organizing where priorities to accomplish multitude of activities.
- Making efficient judgments,
- Developing reports.
- Must possess written and oral communication skills sufficient to follow procedures within the test barn and lab facilities.
Ability to:
- Handle detailed work accurately and in a timely manner.
- Adapt to changing assignments and priorities.
- Respond to inquiries with tact, diplomacy, and appropriate timely information.
- Work as a team player within several divisions.

- Work at all racetrack locations within the State, throughout the year.
- Arizona Board of Veterinary Medicine Certified Veterinary Technician license.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Experience working with horses, preferred.
Candidates for this position will be required to submit to a criminal history investigation. Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.)
