Veterinary Technician

• Works under the supervision and/or assist a staff veterinarian or contract Veterinarian employed by the Houston SPCA.
• Processes patient check in and system registration.
• Ensure routine examinations and treatments of animals in the care of the Houston SPCA Pet Wellness Clinic are properly performed as required.
• Monitor the Houston SPCA care of animals and report any discrepancies to the Wellness Clinic Coordinator.
• Assist staff with initial customer questions and/or issues in a timely manner.
• Ensure animals are properly cared for, monitored, medicated and treated as needed.
• Ensure assigned areas are cleaned on a daily basis.
• Responsible for vaccinating and/or overseeing the vaccination of animals. Working knowledge of x-ray and blood diagnostic equipment.
• Prepare animals, instruments and equipment for surgical procedures.
• Collect specimens including but not limited to blood and fecal samples, and perform laboratory procedures.
• Maintain database thorough and accurate patient records for the animals in our care.
• Ensure proper labeling and dating of medications, maintains accurate inventory of all medications (including controlled substances) in stock and replenishes stock as necessary, and report discrepancies to the veterinary services manager
• Responsible for maintaining an accurate log of all incoming and outgoing controlled substances and immediately report any discrepancies to the Wellness Clinic Coordinator.
• Responsible for finalizing accurate payment transactions.
• Provide information to the public about Houston SPCA programs and promoting good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
• Advise potential adopters of Houston SPCA policies and procedures.
• Protect all confidential information, including customers, donors, animals and internal communications.
• Represent the Houston SPCA by providing excellent customer service and focus.
• Perform additional tasks as assigned.
