Job Description
Responsible for assisting DCM Veterinary Staff with observing, monitoring, documenting, and providing care for a variety of laboratory animals as a component of a rigorous externship program for Veterinary Students.
DUTIES: As assigned by the DCM Veterinary Staff:
  • Physical Examinations. Conduct daily rounds, physical examination of the animals, and document animal health status. Under veterinary and veterinary technician supervision, provide treatment as needed for the animals. Evaluate animals upon receipt for health status. Restrain animals during exams or procedures.
  • Sample Collection. Collect blood, urine, feces, and tissues for analysis. Prepare material for shipment; receive inbound materials and supplies, and store items properly.
  • Pain Management. Assist with provision of anesthesia and analgesia to include recommendation of appropriate medications (considering species and needs), and administration routes as per veterinary orders.
  • Maintain Cleanliness. Maintain laboratory equipment, glassware, and other veterinary equipment in a clean and organized manner. May use acid or autoclave equipment as part of sterilization process. Collect, sort, and deliver laundry when appropriate. Prepare and set up equipment, and ensure general cleanliness of laboratory and DCM veterinary care areas.
  • Records. Create and maintain animal medical record(s) to include but not limited to test results, medication(s) administered, and animal health conditions.
  • Policies. Assist with maintaining an AAALAC-accredited facility in accordance with USDA regulations and PHS policy.
  • Husbandry. Assist with husbandry staff duties, including cage change out, providing food and water as required, observe and report health or care concerns to the supervisor.
  • Other Duties as Assigned. Performs additional minor duties as assigned as part of the overall education as a veterinary technician student and as required to fulfill the expectations of the role as Extern.
Job Requirements
Education:
  • Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited Veterinary College and good academic standing is required.
Skills:
  • Working knowledge of animal husbandry and behavior.
  • Working knowledge of procedures used to restrain and handle animals.
  • General knowledge of an animal facility.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Identify abnormalities and clearly communicate to appropriate veterinary staff.
  • Ability to understand written and verbal instructions; and the ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Must be willing to learn from a variety of personnel.
Preferred:
  • Veterinary students wanting to pursue a career in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Clinical Laboratory Animal experience.
