Veterinary Neurology Anesthetist

The Veterinary Neurological Center is currently seeking an experienced Veterinary Neurology Anesthetist to work alongside our skilled and dedicated technical support team assisting our neurologists. Being able to safely induce, maintain, and recover our patients from anesthesia is essential as general anesthesia is required not only for surgery but for diagnostic imaging as well. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is experienced with anesthesia, has a love for animals, and has the desire to be involved in ensuring that the VNC’s anesthetic procedures are as safe as possible for each special patient. This position is open to both veterinary technicians with anesthetic experience as well as nurse anesthetists who are looking for opportunities outside of the human medical field. A minimum of 5 years of anesthesia experience is required. Previous veterinary experience, and VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia) certification (or in the process of getting certified), or CRNA certifications are not required but are preferred.

Description:

This person will work closely with our neurologists and technicians to ensure that anesthesia is performed safely and that our patients receive the best possible anesthetic care. This will include working with doctors to ensure the best possible practices, training technicians on these practices, and monitoring patients under anesthesia. The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

Responsibilities:

• Assist with Patient Induction, Monitoring, and Recovery of patients who undergo general anesthesia for diagnostic imaging and surgery.
• Administer Medications per the doctor’s orders during anesthetic procedures.
• Record and Chart patient vitals, anesthetic gas levels, medications administered, length of anesthesia, etc. during anesthetic procedures.
• Attend Doctor Meetings and Case Discussions to evaluate prior anesthetic episodes to improve procedures and identify and correct any issues that arise.
• Assist with Updating / Improving Anesthetic Protocols and Procedures with the neurologists to ensure the best possible practices.
• Provide Anesthesia Support Where Needed Most by being able to switch between cases when required as long as it is safe to do so and anesthesia responsibilities are appropriately delegated.
• Train Technicians on the principles and practices to provide safe, excellent care to our patients while under anesthesia.
• Develop In-House Continuing Education to help improve the team’s understanding of anesthesia as well as their anesthesia skills.

While the primary focus of this position is anesthesia, this individual will need to be willing to take on additional responsibilities so that they can assist the Technicians with patients in our Treatment Area when necessary. Those without previous veterinary experience, or experience in these areas of veterinary medicine, who are willing to learn will be trained for these responsibilities. Such responsibilities may include:

• Patient Handling and Restraint
• Jugular Venipuncture
• IV Catheterization
• Urinary Catheterization
• Nursing Care
• Laboratory Procedures
• Surgical Monitoring
• Radiology
• +/- CT Scanning
• +/- MRI Scanning
• +/- CSF Analysis

Essential Qualities:

• Previous Anesthesia Experience a minimum of 5 years of experience where 75% or more of their job duties consisted of anesthesia care
• Professional, responsible, and eager to assist neurologists and team members with each case.

• Team-oriented with a positive attitude that facilitates efficiency and contributes to an enjoyable environment.
• Highly organized facilitating efficiency in all aspects of the job
