Santa Barbara Humane is hiring for Veterinary Clinic Manager at our Santa Maria Campus.
This is an ideal position for an indivdual who is an RVT or experienced Veterinary Assiatant looking to move into a leadership role.
The Veterinary Clinic Manager serves as a veterinary technician who is also responsible for the business activities of the practice including: hiring and training support staff, monitoring and adjusting to key performance indicators such as the number of procedures performed daily, maintaining inventory and an inventory control system, managing the hospital software, and implementing safety and security procedures. This is a leadership position with the additional responsibility of ensuring a positive work environment in which the practice achieves its goals. This role requires the want to better the team and create a positive work environment. The Veterinary Clinic Manager is required to support and advocate for the philosophy, programs, and policies of Santa Barbara Humane.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
VETERINARY TECHNICIAN:
Experience in all aspects of high-volume, high quality spay/neuter surgery including preparing animals for surgery, administering and monitoring anesthesia, assisting veterinarians during surgery, and post-operative management of veterinary patients
Knowledge of anesthetic protocols, venipuncture, the ability to induce, etc.
Prioritizes the availability of shelter pets’ health status to make those animals available for adoption
Serves as the key contact for the medical care of shelter animals and communicates that information to the Veterinary Practice Manager and Shelter Veterinarians
Familiarity with use of medical equipment and tools like autoclaves, catheters, IVs, and monitors
Patience and tolerance with all animals and willingness to provide direct care to cats and dog of all sizes and types and a desire to maintain high level of care for all animals in order to assure their comfort and safety
CLIENT RELATIONS:
Promotes a highly efficient, client-centered environment and facilitates programs and processes that meet shelter and client needs
Maintains the practice philosophy for attracting new clients and retaining existing clients
Facilitates resolution of client problems that other staff members cannot
Recommends appropriate programs and financing opportunities to resolve financial problems with clients
HUMAN RESOURCES:
Plans and organizes staff and clinic volunteers work activities in the clinic, staff schedules and meals/breaks
Schedules and coordinates performance reviews
Hires and manages support staff and/or staff supervisors; schedules staff and doctors
Provides appropriate training and helps staff plan for continuing education; establishes and maintains publications and veterinary medicine library
Resolves staff issues and conflicts
Is accessible by staff while maintaining a professional relationship with them
Trains clinic staff when necessary with regard to processing treatments, discounts, sales and inventory in the clinic database system and monitors that established protocol is being followed
With Director of Veterinary Services and Director of Human Resources, counsels, documents, and enacts progressive discipline, up to and including termination
Reviews and approves timesheets, requests for time off, etc.
BOOKKEEPING/RECORD KEEPING:
Sets goals for hospital performance based on previous performance and mission/vision; designs strategies for meeting these goals
Supervises usage of practice software to ensure that client records are entered consistently and correctly
Monitors and reports on accounts payable and receivable.
Establishes an inventory control system to assure adequate stocks of supplies are available; conducts periodic inventory counts; assures that purchases are correctly classified in the clinic database inventory system with correct cost and price; assists the accounting department in the coding of inventory for correct tracking of sales and use taxes; corresponds with vendors concerning sales and use tax on purchases; plans for periodic audits; negotiates best prices
HOSPITAL FACILITY:
Contracts for and supervises all maintenance activities to ensure that practice medical standards are met
Orders and supervises storage of non-medical supplies
Maintains a facility visually appealing to client and staff
Designs and administers safety and security regulations and training
OTHER:
Participates in meetings and respond to management communications as required
Demonstrates regular attendance and timeliness
Communicates objectives, motivates staff, builds and maintains morale
Sets up clinic staff meetings
Promotes cooperative working environment among shelter departments and staff members; understands the value of teamwork; shows enthusiasm and willingness to perform as necessary to help the practice function as a unit
Understands and carries out oral and written directions
Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees
Promotes continuous quality improvement
Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledgeable regarding related federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA and DEA; ensures that the hospital and its employees are in compliance with regulations; informs the Veterinary Practice Manager of any regulatory issues
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of 4 years of college or equivalent veterinary technician management experience
Excellent animal handling and animal care skills
Some teaching experience is highly desirable.
Must be able to work with people from a variety of backgrounds who may have different orientations to animals due to cultural traditions
Excellent oral and written communication skills
RVT preferred
Must hold a current Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance permit (VACSP) from the California Veterinary Medical Board or have the ability to obtain this license within 30 days of employment (if not RVT)
Proficient in use of commercial clinic and shelter software
Ability to function independently, manage multiple projects and meet competing deadlines.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position requires some weekend and evening work
Work is performed within an animal shelter where loud noises, disease and exposure to hazards may be possible
Physical requirements may include: bending, standing for long periods, stooping, reaching and other physical demands
Must be able to safely restrain large and/or agitated animals
Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
Occasionally handle dogs weighing up to and over 150 pounds; assistance provided by animal handlers when working with larger animals
