Job Summary:
Assist veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians in providing professional animal care services for clients and their pets. Duties including but not limited to: medical record keeping, handling animals of various sizes and temperaments, administering medications (orally or subcutaneously), acquiring laboratory samples, processing in-house and reference lab samples, surgical preparation and post-operative patient care, taking radiographs, filling prescriptions, cleaning and maintaining instruments and other supplies, maintaining a clean hospital and work environment.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Check-in clients, obtain relevant medical history, triage patient care, obtain vitals.
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients in varying emotional states.
- Perform proper and safe restraint for veterinarians/vet technicians.
- Perform diagnostics and treatments independently, under the guidance of licensed veterinary staff.
- Discharge patients and relay discharge instructions effectively.
- Ensure exam rooms and treatment areas are clean and stocked with supplies as needed.
- Assist in cleaning the hospital including but not limited to: laundry, floors, taking out the trash, cleaning treatment areas, surgery, exam rooms, kennels, bathrooms and breakroom.
- Answer phones and make appointments; process payments and refunds.
- Relay appropriate information to/from clients to doctors and/or management.
- Maintain proper documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Computer skills: proficiency navigating Windows based computer systems, word processing, email, web search, and strong typing skills needed to effectively use the practice management software program.
- Physical requirement include: frequent kneeling and stooping, moving animals from cage to cage, floor to floor, room to room. Restraining animals up to 200 pounds intermittently, lifting animals up to 50 pounds and lifting animals over 50 pounds with help.
- Other: Assistants must possess good critical thinking and problem solving skills, compassion, a positive attitude, excellent communication skills and teamwork skills. Multi-tasking and accepting constructive criticism is essential. Punctuality is a must.
Job Qualifications
- Education: Training through state-approved programs or equivalent training under experienced pet care providers.
- Experience: Previous veterinary experience required. Emergency / Urgent Care specialty experience strongly preferred.
