Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Assist Port Captain and Port Engineer in ensuring that the Company Safety and Environmental Policies and Procedures are understood and implemented onboard all company vessels.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

PRIMARY TASKS                                                                                                                                                     

  • Perform shoreside support functions for both the fleet Port Engineer and Port Captain on a shared basis as needed and directed.
  • Assist Port Captain and Port Engineer in monitoring vessel compliance to all company policies including safety and environmental policies.
  • Assist and participate with or on behalf of Port Captain or Port Engineer on all regulatory inspections, as mandated by U.S.C.G. and class authorities.
  • Assist Port Captain with the monitoring of the safe and efficient cargo transfer operations on all assigned vessels as directed.
  • Assist on or attend lightering operations.
  • Assist Port Captain and Port Engineer with the scheduling of inspections and equipment service.
  • Performs vessel inspections as needed on behalf of Port Captain and Port Engineer.
  • Support shore side engineering and operations department in repair and maintenance for vessels including routine voyage repairs, regulatory surveys, dry docking shipyard events, emergencies, casualties, and modifications.
  • Assist Port Engineer or other engineering personnel in technical matters relating to the proper functioning of vessel machinery, systems, and components.
  • Participate in incident response, investigation and corrective action as directed.

SECONDARY TASKS

  • Clearly communicate to all vessel personnel that their safety and the protection of the environment are the company's primary concern.  The prevention of injuries and illness onboard our vessels should be fundamental to all operational decisions.
  • Assist Port Captain with communication with the vessel Masters.
  • Help the Master in the safe and cost-efficient operation of their assigned vessel.
  • Remain abreast of compliance with applicable flag state and class standards, international, federal and state regulations.
  • Attend vessels regularly to monitor maintenance, equipment functionality and observe the training and development of crews.
  • Assist Port Captain with vessel  crewing and crew change evolutions.
  • Stay abreast of working knowledge of F.I.M.S. and vessel requisition software. Assist the Port Captain and Port Engineer with the monitoring of requisitions and maintenance service requests and keeping them up to date.
  • Participate where required in shore side and vessel SIRE, RCP, ISM audits, security audits and Emergency response exercises. Follow-up with required corrective actions.
  • Assist Port Captain with oversight of the vessel Environmental programs to ensure effectiveness in accordance with company policies.
  • Assist in monitoring routine and major maintenance as well as deck and engine consumables.
  • Assist as directed in the tracking, approval and delivery of spare parts and vessel stores.
  • Assist in maintaining and managing shoreside inventory & shipping and receiving.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • B.S. Marine Field, Maritime Academy Graduate, or 2 years in a related field. Seagoing experience required commensurate with assignment. 
  • Written and verbal communications at all organizational levels in a clear and concise manner.
  • Computer skills, working knowledge of spreadsheet and word-processing programs.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks requiring solid planning, control, review, and cost projection/variance analysis skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of International and USCG regulations and requirements concerning company vessels
  • Possess good prioritization skills, is highly motivated and organized.
  • English speaking and US Citizen.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to travel frequently for unscheduled emergency vessel repairs.
  • Demanding physical requirements including climbing in cargo and ballast tanks under environmental extremes of heat or cold. No fear of heights.
  • Ability to board vessels at anchor.
  • Willingness to remain accessible for communication and consultation on an around the clock basis.
  • Willingness to work unusual hours including nights and weekends as required for successful project completion.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Medium - Lifting 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Moderate - Occasionally exposed to extreme atmospheric conditions (temperature, noise fumes, dust, etc.)
