Position Summary
This position description has been prepared to assist in evaluating duties, responsibilities, and skills of the position. It is not intended as a complete list of specific responsibilities and duties, nor is it intended to limit duties to those listed. This position assists in the planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing of resident activities in accordance with current existing federal, state, and local standards as well as established policies and procedures, to assure that the spiritual development, emotional, recreational, and social needs of the residents are met and maintained on an individual basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the activity programs of Vernon Manor. Meets with Activity Director and other related departments in planning activities. Assists in developing and maintaining a good working rapport with other departments within the facility and outside the community to assure that activity programs can be properly maintained to meet the needs of the residents. Keeps abreast of current federal and state regulations. Participates in scheduled in-service training programs in relation to the social, emotional, and recreational needs of the residents. Ensures that nursing supervisor assists residents with selection of activity in compliance with physician’s orders. Interviews residents and families as directed by the Activity Director in a private setting. Performs administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc., and submits such to the Activity Director as required. Involves the resident and family in planning activities when possible. Assists in arranging transportation of field trips and of other functions when necessary. Encourages residents to enhance their educational development through reading, etc. Provides information to residents and families as to the activity programs available. Encourages hobbies and crafts and provides materials in keeping with the residents’ financial status and department budget. Assists in obtaining information concerning the resident’s backgrounds to better provide activities to meet their needs. Records and maintains activity records of residents’ activities. Maintains and excellent working relationship with the medical profession and other health-related personnel and organizations. Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department. Assists in compiling and maintaining an activity schedule. Meets with Activity Director on a regular basis to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services. Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent resident care information to assure resident rights are protected. Assists in coordinating programs and activities with other departments as necessary. Makes scheduled visits to residents and performs assistance with crafts, projects, etc., as requested by the Activity Director. Reviews complaints and grievances and makes necessary oral/written reports to the Activity Director. Keeps abreast of economic conditions and situations and recommends adjustments to assure the continued ability to provide quality resident care. Recommends to the Activity Director supply needs of the department. Makes written and oral reports and recommendations to the Activity Director concerning the operation of the Activity Department. Assists in standardizing the methods in which work will be accomplished. Assists in scheduling movies, planning parties, providing games, and arranging other activities for residents. Reports all incidents/accidents immediately. Reports all unsafe and hazardous conditions and equipment immediately. Assures that established safety regulations are followed at all times. Assists in preparing craft supplies and materials and supervises activities. Assures that the current activity schedule is followed for each resident. Is alert for any change in the residents’ conditions; reports to charge nurse immediately. Assists in encouraging residents to participate in religious activities through religious services, reading material, visits with clergy, etc., to fulfill their basic religious needs. Participates and assists in departmental studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessary. Assists bed- and chair-fast residents by visiting with them, writing letters, running errands as necessary, or as requested by the Activity Director. In the absence of the Activity Director, assumes the responsibility of operating the Activity Department according to the schedule. Assists with overall cleaning, and keeps Activity area and areas used by Activity clean, sanitary and orderly.
Physical Demands
- Works in well-lighted/ventilated areas. Sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves intermittently during working hours. Is subject to frequent interruptions. Is involved with residents, family members, personnel, visitors, etc., under all conditions and circumstances. Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, etc. Communicates with nursing personnel and other department personnel. Is willing to work beyond normal working hours and in other positions temporarily, when necessary. Attends and participated in in-service education programs as directed. Is subject to falls, burns from equipment, infectious diseases, substances, odors, etc., throughout the work day. Is economical and careful with supplies, equipment, etc. Is able to move intermittently throughout the work day. Is able to speak the English language in an understandable manner. Is able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position. Possesses sight and hearing senses, or uses prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met. Functions independently, has flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel and support agencies. Is in good general health, and demonstrates emotional stability. Is able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset and at times hostile people within the facility. May be required to lift equipment, residents, and supplies, and occasionally move furniture.
