POSITION: VEGETATION MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST
LOCATION: HAMPDEN OPERATIONS CENTER
REPORTS TO: SUPERVISOR, VEGETATION MANAGEMENT
POSITION STATUS: EXEMPT, NON-BARGAINING UNIT
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Vegetation Management, this position is responsible for the field oversight and some administration for the execution of the VEGETATION MANAGEMENT program. This role includes crew coordination, work planning, safety compliance assurance, quality control, customer communication, productivity assessments, cost management, and record-keeping.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Visit and oversee the work of all crews on a regular basis. Assure performance in the areas of productivity, cost, adherence to arboreal standards, quality of work, and adherence to safety and work standards, equipment, tools, and professionalism.
  • Assure compliance with the Versant Contractor Safety Program.
  • Responsible for program quality assurance.
  • Provide field leadership in the area of cost management.
  • Keep updated on industry innovations, new technology and new practices. Manage trials of new approaches within the Versant Power program.
  • Assures compliance with the Versant Environmental Management System, and promptly reports on any non-compliance incidents.
  • Assure the environmental and social safety of the herbicide program.
  • Lead the further development, refinement and effectiveness of the danger tree program.
  • Support clearing and trim for capital projects.
  • Work closely with program supervisor, to schedule and assign crews in the most efficient manner to address the varied program demands: cycle trim, danger trees, customer projects, and capital projects.
  • Compile and maintain various records and files related to the program. Assist in the preparation of statistical reports, and data analysis.
  • Assist in the alignment and accuracy of invoicing with field production.
  • Works in accordance with the documented environmental procedures, instructions, and specific responsibilities as defined in individual procedures and instructions. Reports problems or deviations associated with environmental issues and the Environmental Management System (EMS) to the Environmental Department.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Other related duties as assigned, including designated duties associated with System Emergencies.
REQUIRED OR PREFERRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Forestry or other biological sciences preferred. Bachelor degree in other fields such as engineering or business also considered.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, interpersonal and influence skills are essential.
  • Strong skills in the areas of computers and technology, including map reading and understanding of Geographic Information Systems required.
  • Hold, or be able to obtain within 9 months, an ISA Certified Arborist, ISA Certified Arborist Utility Specialist, and ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualifications.
  • Current valid Maine driver’s license is required.
  • Hold, or be able to obtain within 9 months, a Master Certified Pesticide Applicator License in the State of Maine

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Position requires driving, sitting, standing, walking, climbing, and bending. Ability to walk and climb in areas of very rough and difficult terrain.
  • Position requires extended periods of time in severe weather conditions during normal operations and especially during storm conditions. The position also requires exposure to extremes of cold, heat, and humidity.
  • Position requires technical aptitude and extensive computer skills.
  • Position requires ability to work closely with crew members, and with the public sometimes under stressful conditions.
  • Position requires ability to work effectively and safely under pressure and stress.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, build collaborative relationships, is able to de-escalate tense situations.

WORKING SCHEDULE:
The normal work week is Monday through Friday; the normal work schedule is from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 45 hours per week. Extended hours and weekend work could be required, especially during storm conditions.
RATE OF PAY
Commensurate with experience and qualifications. Further pay information will be available during the interview process..
