The County of San Diego offers a high deductible health plan to all Temporary Employees. The County also pays a portion of the premium for Temporary/Seasonal employees.
The Position
This is a temporary position. Candidates hired into these positions will work approximately 40 hours per week for the next 6 to 8 months. Candidates shall be employed for less than one hundred and twenty-one (121) working days during a fiscal year on a part-time or intermittent basis. (Compensation Ordinance Section 3.6.10: Intermittent Worker)
The Department of Environmental Health & Quality is currently seeking a Vector Control Technician Aide - Temporary/Seasonal that will be assigned in the Community Health Division - Vector Control Program. The work location is 5570 Overland Avenue, Suite 102, San Diego 92123.
The Vector Control Technician Aide - Temporary/Seasonal will conduct short-term activities, specifically related to mosquito surveillance and control throughout San Diego County. Due to seasonal increases in vector-borne illness throughout San Diego County in the warmer months, seasonal surveillance and control efforts are essential.
This is the entry level class in the Vector Control Technician series. Under immediate supervision, Vector Control Technician Aides receive direct training to apply pesticides, and acquire on-the-job experience in Vector Control work leading to certification by the State of California.

The Department
The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health & Quality (DEHQ) enhances San Diegans' quality of life by protecting public health and safeguarding environmental quality, educating the public to increase environmental awareness, and implementing and enforcing local, state, and federal environmental laws. The Community Health Division includes the Vector Control Program (VCP), a county-wide program that monitors vectors and the diseases that they carry.
Working Conditions - This is NOT a laboratory position
Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous gases and chemicals, vectors and vector-borne diseases, rough terrain, inclement weather conditions, vicious animals, poisonous plants and animals, and may deal with irate or hostile individuals. Incumbents will spend the vast majority of the time outdoors.
Hiring Timeline & Dates
  • Job Offer and Background Process begins after interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

A high school diploma or equivalent.
