Location: Vandenberg Space Force Base / Full-time: Monday - Friday / Hours: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM / Starting Rate: $24.18 per hour
PURPOSE OF POSITION

In this position, the Vandenberg Space Force Base (VSFB) Gardener is responsible for the irrigation system at areas throughout the assigned military base and per contract.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on sprinkler systems as needed.
- Check all sprinkler heads and remove grass around them to water lawn areas properly.
- Program all automatic controllers for proper irrigation cycles.
- Develop and maintain a watering schedule for all lawn areas to keep them according to contract specifications.
- Make sure areas are not being overwatered and avoid pools of standing water.
- Perform plant bed maintenance which includes fertilizing, weeding, mulching and policing as needed.
- Prune trees up to 15 feet in height including cleanup and debris removal as needed.
- Prune shrubs, hedges and vines including cleanup and debris removal as needed.
- Trim and edge around walks, flower beds and walls including cleanup and debris removal as needed.
- Turf rejuvenation to include dethatching, aerating, seeding and fertilizing as needed.
- In the absence of the VAFB Tractor Driver, perform the duties of that position.
- Perform routine cleaning, preventative maintenance and minor repair tasks on tools and equipment as required.
- Operate hand tools and power tools commonly utilized in grounds maintenance operations safely and proficiently.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent with at least 4 years of practical experience as an Irrigation Technician.
- Knowledge of Grounds Maintenance Tools: Must demonstrate the proficient use the following tools: 85 HP Tractor, backpack blower, hedge trimmer, line trimmer and chainsaw.
- Ability to remember and follow verbal directions.
- Able to read and interpret written or oral equipment operation procedures in English.
- Must be proficient in speaking & understanding the English language in order to communicate with the control tower at the airfield.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with coworkers and management; Ability to work as part of a team.
- Perform effectively in environments with frequent workload changes and competing demands.
- Set priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities.
- Ability to perform repetitive work according to set procedures.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out basic written or oral instructions.

Requirements
- Valid driver's license with an insurable record.
- An insured vehicle available for use during employment.
- Must obtain and maintain proper license in order to operate tractor on airfield.
- Maintain First Aid and CPR certifications.
- Must be willing and able to work up to 8 hours per shift.
- Must be able to work in varying weather conditions, shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
