Job description

About Baton
We're building America's small business marketplace. Baton is supercharged by data to support business owners and potential buyers through the historically opaque and illiquid $11 trillion small business acquisition market.
We're looking for people who take real pride in their work and are willing to stand up for customers, even when that means asking tough questions or sharing hard truths. Who are humble enough to look at data with an open mind, but ambitious enough to dream big when the opportunity presents itself.
We aim to build and maintain a team that's as diverse as the people who use our products. That's why our hiring process looks at the whole person and their potential along with the skills and experience that jump off the screen.
Baton is backed by Bloomberg Beta, Giant, Trust Fund, WndrCo, and a syndicate of world-class investors.
About The Role
We are seeking a highly motivated and results-driven Valuation Analyst to join our dynamic team here at Baton. This is the first Valuation Analyst hire and you will play a crucial role in driving the growth of our company by enabling us to deliver more valuations to small business owners. You will help shape how the role evolves and how we scale the Valuation function and team over time. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of our company's expansion, working closely across the company and allowing Baton to build the first true small business marketplace in the US.
The Valuation Analyst's goal is to provide fast and accurate valuations throughout the entire Baton process from initial valuation to listing a business for sale and during offer negotiations and closing. You play a critical role in the Baton process, ensuring our valuations are fair, accurate, and competitive. You'll also develop a strong foundation for Baton's data operations, which lays the groundwork for opportunities in valuation strategy and product management.
On a day-to-day basis, you will...
  • show an ability to effectively organize, plan, direct, and complete valuations in our system.
  • deliver high quality work product, both from a qualitative or business writing standpoint and a quantitative standpoint.
  • use valuation model outputs and internal tools built by our engineering team and provide feedback for improvements.
  • engage cross-functionally (sales team, product team, etc.) to ensure we are valuing businesses accurately.
  • participate in special projects such as collaborating with our data science and engineering teams to improve our models and tools.
  • implement and monitor a system for valuation efficiency and to be accountable for the results.
  • improve existing business processes, financial models, and valuation reports and models.
  • show superior research, analytical, verbal comprehension, and communication skills.
  • develop expertise on industry and local market nuances over time.
  • work closely with the sales, marketing, and product teams to align valuation strategies with broader business objectives.

About You
  • One (1) to three (3) years of related business valuation experience, preferably with a focus on private company valuations.
  • Extensive experience working with complex valuation and projection models and proficiency at financial modeling.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and familiarity with SQL.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related field.
  • You have a genuine enthusiasm for supporting small business owners in their journey, with a passion for understanding the challenges and aspirations they face when selling their businesses.
  • You happily balance the high-level and low-level work; you wear many hats and are hands-on where needed to get things done.

If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you!
Benefits
  • Work from anywhere.
  • 100% employer-paid healthcare options.
  • Meaningful pay, equity, and 401K option.
  • Unlimited PTO and 10 mandatory vacation days.
  • On-demand mental health support from Spill.
  • In-person team off-sites four times a year.
  • Apple laptop of your choice.
  • Parental leave program.
  • The opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of small business owners and their communities.
