Description

The United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM) is offering a biomedical research fellowship to a BS- level or MS-level Biomedical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering within USARIEM's Thermal and Mountain Medicine Division.

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will learn and gain hands-on experience in biomedical research, modeling, finite element method, data analysis, biophysics, and physiology.

What is the anticipated start date?

USARIEM is ready to make appointments as soon as possible. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

Appointments are initially for one year, with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on a participant's academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About USARIEM

The United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), located in Natick, Massachusetts, is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter health and performance science and its applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, and nutrition research. It features integrated cellular, tissue, and human research programs.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD, or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have a bachelor's or master's degree (or will have completed their degree by summer 2023) in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Math or Science, or a similar discipline. The degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.

Highly competitive applicants will have some experience with the following:

  • Thermal aspects of the interaction between humans, clothing, and the environment.
  • Knowledge of fundamental physics and engineering principles with an emphasis on heat transfer and thermodynamics.
  • Familiarity with the finite element method and software is a plus.
  • Computing skills (experience with R, C#, Java, and/or MATLAB preferred).

The successful applicant will be required to comply with the host facility's Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) requirements, including but not limited to COVID-19 requirements (e.g., facial covering, physical distancing, testing vaccination).
