Primary Purpose
Summer Academic year 2023 - 2024 Instructor Positions Available:
  1. Math Instructor
  2. Foreign Language Instructor (American Sign Language, Spanish)
  3. Science Instructor
  4. English & Literature Instructor
  5. Elective Instructors (Rock Climbing, Student Leadership, Zumba, Theater, Art, Cell Phone Photography)

The Upward Bound Program at SOCC is funded by a TRIO grant through the U.S. Department of Education. The program is designed to help participants generate the academic skills and motivation necessary for success in education beyond high school. Participants are high school students who come from low-income backgrounds where neither parent has earned a bachelor's degree. For six weeks, Upward Bound provides students an intensive summer program on the SOCC Campus.
SCHEDULE: 2023-2024 Academic Year
June 12 - Planning and Class set up
June 13 - Academy in Service/Training
June 17- July 19 (Monday - Thursday 8am - 2:50 pm)
Description of Essential Functions
The Upward Bound Instructor will develop and teach content-area curriculum for high school students (rising 9th to 12th graders). These positions are summer appointments that involve five weeks of daily student instruction Monday-Thursday. Core classes (Math, Science, English, Foreign Language) are 50 minutes and elective courses are 90 minutes. In accordance with the Upward Bound grant requirements, instructors will design a basic pre-test and posttest to demonstrate students' measurable growth in subject areas. Class size will vary based on academic needs of students. Typical class size will be about 18-20 students.
Hired instructors are expected to attend a paid half-day Staff Orientation & Planning Session the week prior to the start of the academy. Specific course supplies and materials will need to be requested prior to Staff Orientation.
Key Duties:
  1. Develop and implement content-area curriculum.
  2. Develop a pre-test and post-test assessment of core subject area taught.
  3. Provide grades for class and brief written student evaluation.
  4. Assess students' cognitive needs and develop/adjust curriculum to address those needs.
  5. Identify and assist in obtaining resources needed to implement curriculum.
  6. Serve as a positive role model for participants.
  7. Manage classroom behavior to create a positive classroom learning culture.
  8. Log all homework given and provide information to designated Program Staff.
  9. Maintain accurate participant records, attendance, tardiness, and grades.
  10. Attend all staff meetings and training sessions.
  11. Use of professional ethics.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required Qualifications:
  1. Strong communication skills: public speaking, interpersonal, and written.
  2. Subject area teaching/tutoring expertise.
  3. Ability to effectively work and communicate with high school students and adult staff.
  4. Strong organizational skills.
  5. Punctuality.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Current Oregon Secondary Teaching Certification
  2. Experience with students from culturally diverse backgrounds
  3. Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines
  4. Previous TRIO program experience
