Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The UNC Upward Bound Program is a Federal TRiO Program funded to serve 102 Eligible High School Scholars in Select High Schools in Durham, Chatham, and Lee Counties. Our goal is to help Scholars build the Skills and Motivation necessary to pursue and succeed in College and attain a Bachelor's Degree. Each summer, the Program offers Scholars a Comprehensive, 6-week Summer Academy that provides Academic Enrichment, Professional Development, and Personal Growth Opportunities for Participants. Upward Bound Scholars engage in Math, Science, English, Spanish, History, and Elective Courses throughout the Summer.
Position Summary
PCMs will provide Support to the Summer Program by ensuring the Success of Upward Bound Scholars throughout the Summer Academy. Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Provide Program Support to UB Staff throughout the Duration of the Summer Program.
• Provide Mentorship and Support to Scholars.
• Assist with chaperoning UB Scholars.
• Facilitate Summer THRIVE course for Upward Bound Scholars, in collaboration with other PCMs.
• Lead PCMs provide Oversight for the THRIVE Course and to the Non-Lead PCMs.
• Attend Required Staff Training and Student Orientation Sessions prior to the Beginning of the Summer Academy.
• Able to commit to 40 Hours of Work each week.
• Must successfully complete a Background Check (Additional Information will be provided to Select Applicants).
• Present themselves as positive, motivational Role Models to Scholars at all times.
• Demonstrate Integrity, Dependability, and Passion for promoting Student Access and Success.
• Report to the Upward Bound Assistant Director
• Uphold all CHEOP/Upward Bound and University Policies and Procedures.
• Able to fulfill the Responsibilities of the Selected Position.
Pre-College Mentors join a Team of CHEOP/Upward Bound Staff, Academic Instructors, Supplemental Instructors, a Bridge Coordinator and a College Prep Coach who collaborate to ensure the Success of the Summer Academy. The 6-week Summer Program will occur from June 17th, 2023 - July 28th, 2023.
SUMMER 2023 PROGRAM DETAILS
All Summer 2023 Programming including the Academic Sessions will be held in-person on the UNC Chapel Hill campus. In addition to Academic Courses, Scholars receive an SAT Test Preparation Course, Career Exploration and Cultural Enrichment Opportunities, a THRIVE Research Course, and a Cohort-based College Preparation Seminar. The Program will host the Summer Research Symposium & Awards Ceremony on Friday, July 28th. Supplemental Instructors are expected to attend and assist Scholars with their Preparation and celebrate their Work. Specific Summer 2023 Program Details will be provided at a Later Date.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This is a Paid Employment Opportunity. If selected, Participants should be able to commit to the Entire Summer Academy (Preparation Period: May 15th, 2023 - June 16th, 2023) and (Summer Academy: June 17th, 2023 - July 28th, 2023). To become a Pre-College Mentor, Students must meet the following Requirements:
• Be a Current Undergraduate Student (Pre-College Mentor Position)
• Have and maintain a Minimum 2.75 Cumulative GPA and be in Good Standing with their respective Institution.
• Experience working with First-Generation and/or Underrepresented Minority Youth as a Camp Counselor or Student Leader.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience working with minority youth in a camp counselor setting.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to lift/move/maneuver at least 25 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
