The Programs under CHEOP Enhance Participants' Academic Performance, Retention, and Personal and Professional Development to Promote Graduation in Secondary and Post-Secondary Education.

ensure success in post-secondary education and lifelong learning. The Upward Bound Program is one of two TRiO
Programs as part of the Carolina Higher Education Opportunity Programs ( CHEOP) Office.
The Assistant Director of Upward Bound reports to the Associate Director of TRiO Programs and is responsible for
assisting in the planning, coordination, assessment and supervision of significant components of the Upward Bound
Program. The Associate Director of the TRiO Programs reports to the Senior Director of CHEOP and has day-to-day
responsibility for overseeing the activities, programs, and operations of the TRiO Programs.
Specific responsibilities of the Assistant Director position include:
Program development, implementation, and evaluation. The Assistant Director oversees the planning, development,
implementation and evaluation of the Upward Bound curriculum, summer programming and cultural activities
administered at UNC-Chapel Hill through supervision of program staff and monitoring of programmatic activities and
participants. Program evaluation is an essential responsibility to ensure thorough documentation of achievements
and accountability for program outcomes.
Strategic planning-The Assistant Director generates long and short-range strategies to ensure high quality
educational and academic counseling services to effectively serve the needs of high school students.
Fiscal and administrative oversight and fundraising-The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing Upward
Bound budgetary matters, including annual budget development, and reporting and day-to-day oversight;
developing grant proposals and providing oversight of grants and contracts; fundraising; supervision of Graduate
Assistants, Work Study students, Tutors and High School Coordinators.
External relations, partnership development, and collaboration - The Assistant Director supports the TRiO Programs
Director as an official representative to internal and external constituencies, responsible for developing and
maintaining productive relationships with faculty, staff, administrators, and students from affiliated high schools,
community leaders and social service administrators.
The Assistant Director must demonstrate strong communication and organization skills along with an understanding of working with disadvantaged youth and populations. They also must have evidence of excellent interpersonal skills reflected through successful work with teachers, administrators, community persons, and or counselors.
Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Experience in program development and implementation of curriculum, summer programming and cultural activities is also preferred.
The Assistant Director is also recommended to understand college readiness or remediation
programs and possess strong writing skills and grant writing experience.
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
