Subject background in one of the life sciences, physical sciences or engineering disciplines demonstrated through academic degrees, course work, or substantive experience.
Demonstrated experience with reference, instruction and collection development in an academic or research library.
Demonstrated public service skills and a strong commitment to customer service and the land grant mission.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to function independently and in groups, build and maintain relationships with campus partners and library staff.
Demonstrated ability to work with SpringShare and/or other online educational tools to produce online educational materials.
Supervisory or leadership experience.
Job Description:
Summary
The Iowa State University Library is seeking a collaborative and proactive individual to fill a new Unit Lead position in Research & Instruction Services as a Librarian III. They will be responsible for research assistance, library instruction, and collection development for the Science and Engineering unit. This role supervises and manages a small team of librarians and assists in actively expanding campus reach. This position is one of four Unit Leads reporting to the Head of Research & Instruction Services.
This is a great opportunity for Research Services Librarians looking to expand their skills and job duties to include supervision. There is financial support for professional development and a strong mentorship program.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
Major Duties
  • Serves as a Unit Lead for a small team of librarians, including their supervision.
  • Serves as a research services librarian, working with students, faculty, and staff, maintaining knowledge of subject areas and stakeholder needs.
  • Engages in outreach to stakeholders on campus, continuing to integrate the Library into curricular and co-curricular efforts.
  • Designs develops, and delivers instruction in a variety of formats, including subject-based information literacy instruction teaching or co-teaching materials drawn from print and digital collections.
  • Provides liaison services including, but not limited to, research support, in-depth research consultations, and participates in the Library's live chat service.
  • Engages with collections across the lifecycle, including collection development, management, and assessment, and is familiar with the publishing environments in disciplines related to the position.
  • Communicates and collaborates with Library colleagues across all units to explore and meet stakeholder needs and advance Library collaborations and interdisciplinary efforts.
  • Engages in professional development and continuing education and is active in professional associations related to the work of the position.

Level Guidelines
• Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISU's mission and department or work unit goals
• Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
• Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
• Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
• Responds to complicated inquiries, provides training, and provides direction to lower-level staff
• May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e., leads a small work team)
• May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
• Provides guidance to students
