Job description

What You Will Do
We seek outstanding candidates to fill an opening for an experimental Postdoctoral Research Associate position in tabletop, time-resolved extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and soft x-ray spectroscopy of Magnetic Materials. The successful applicant will join our multidisciplinary collaboration aimed at the study and control of the dynamic properties of two-dimensional (2D) Magnetic Materials. The prospective candidate will primarily be involved with the development, optimization, and use of a high harmonic generation (HHG) based table-top XUV/soft-X-ray light sources to probe ultrafast optically-induced magnetic phenomena. The prospective candidate may also participate in complementary experiments at XUV and X-ray beamline facilities around the world. Finally, the prospective candidate will have access to a wide variety of laser systems, laser-based spectroscopy techniques, and material systems through on-going research being conducted at CINT's Laboratory for Ultrafast Materials and Optical Science (LUMOS). Information on current research projects and capabilities at LUMOS are available at http://cint.lanl.gov/facilities/LUMOS/.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Strong hands-on, experimental background in one of these areas: higher order harmonic generation (HHG), ultrafast optics, ultrafast spectroscopy and/or opto-magnetism.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex experiments.
  • Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Communication skills as evidenced by oral presentations at conferences.
  • Ability to work in a diverse and dynamic team environment.

Education: Must have received a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field within the last five years or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.
Desired Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will have several of the following:
  • Experience doing HHG-based XUV and soft x-ray generation.
  • Knowledge of 2D Magnetic Materials.
  • Experience in time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD).
  • Strong skills in high power ultrafast laser systems (such as Ti:Sapphire and YAG-based lasers) and the alignment of optical systems.
  • Experience with the design, implementation, and use of ultra-high vacuum systems.
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python and/or LabView for data analysis and instrument control

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Note to Applicants:
In addition to applying online on the LANL jobs site, qualified candidates should email a copy of their cover letter and CV with the subject "XUV magnetism postdoc," as well as arrange for the submission of three reference letters to Pamela Bowlan (pambowlan@lanl.gov) and Prashant Padmanabhan (prashpad@lanl.gov). Any questions about the position may also be directed to Pamela Bowlan and Prashant Padmanabhan.
