Job description

What You Will Do
Perform multi-step organic synthesis of small molecules and biomimetic materials. The candidate will develop novel synthetic methods utilizing continuous flow, standard benchtop methods, and automated solid-phase synthesis. Then, materials will be fully characterized by NMR, MS, and HPLC. Candidate must be able to work in a strong interdisciplinary environment and communicate effectively.
Outstanding candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and exceptional candidates may be considered for the prestigious Darleane Christian Hoffman, Richard P. Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Fellowships.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Proven ability to develop and perform multi-step organic synthesis independently.
  • Use of chemical literature as a guide to help develop synthetic methods.
  • Expertise in product separation and purification through chromatographic methods including flash and HPLC. This includes method development for reverse and normal phase HPLC separations.
  • Ability to write papers for publication into peer-reviewed journals.
  • Expertise in characterization techniques including NMR and MS.
  • Ability to formulate and implement innovative approaches and solutions to synthetic problems.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing, for a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to obtain a DOE "Q" security clearance.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and uphold a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Education: Recent completion of PhD within last five years of start date. Current PhD candidates near dissertation defense are also encouraged to apply.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Excellent in problem solving, especially in developing schemes for organic synthesis and formulating alternate synthetic strategies.
  • Experience with solid-phase and automated synthesis.
  • Experience with operation of continuous flow equipment including knowledge of in-line analytics such as React-IR.
  • HPLC method development and purification of biomaterials.
  • Excellent Schlenk-line technique for reactions with inert atmosphere requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills among a diverse group of scientists.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $92,000. Where You Will Work
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
The Engineered Materials Group (MST-7) provides multidisciplinary expertise in materials science ranging from polymers and foams to target fabrication and materials discovery. This expertise is focused on delivering technology solutions for national security missions. The group has great breadth and depth in many aspects of Polymer Science and Engineering, such as a strong coatings capability, including physical and chemical vapor deposition, a suite of polymer Additive Manufacturing instrumentation, and extensive Characterization and Forensics capabilities. In particular, MST-7 applies an extensive knowledge of chemistry, physics, materials science, biomaterials, chemical engineering, and mechanical engineering to study matter under various environmental and extreme conditions relevant to our customers. MST-7 is involved in many research programs, such as inertial confinement fusion, nuclear weapons programs, including core and enhanced surveillance, directed stockpile and lifetime extension programs, global security, homeland defense, and civilian applications of materials technologies. MST-7 personnel include scientists, engineers, technologists, technicians, and administrative support personnel, who team within the group and with other organizations to fulfill our various missions.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Q Clearance: Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
