Posting Summary
Rutgers University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) has several openings for Physician Specialists (Psychiatrists) for our Southern New Jersey locations.
The Physician Specialist provides direct clinical care to state prisoners, functions collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and maintains effective communication with staff and administration.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provides assessments, direct clinical care and treatment to inmates.
  • Conducts comprehensive psychiatrist assessments (demonstrating a review of the electronic record, psychotropic medications, history of mental illness, prior psychiatric hospitalization, suicidal, unusual or bizarre behavior) for new admissions to UCHC's Special Needs roster according to established time frames.
  • Orders, initiates and interprets laboratory tests according to required time frames or as medically necessary.
  • Conducts adequate and timely civil psychiatric commitment evaluations.
  • Adequately completes required peer reviews or other audits within required time frames.
  • Participates in treatment planning.

Minimum Education and Experience
Certifications/Licenses
  • Licensed Physician in the State of New Jersey.
  • Current DEA registration, CDS and CPR certifications.
  • Eligible for certification or certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in Psychiatry.
  • Valid driver's license.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to speak clearly and write proficiently is essential.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Forensic Psychiatry preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Typing, ability to work at varying computer workstations provided by the Department of Corrections in shared office environments. Ability to move from unit to unit within a Department of Corrections' facilities. Lifting of up to 10 pounds, ability to implement Universal Precautions and Safety Precautions, and the ability to climb a flight of stairs is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:Able to function in a stressful environment and relate well to the patients, security staff and health care team members. A generally crisis oriented, secure environment working with inmates, some who exhibit aggressive, threatening behavior. Physician must exhibit flexibility to work in a variety of settings. Entering and movement within the facility will be controlled by Correctional Officers. Must be able to maneuver around architectural barriers and obstructions found in a prison environment. Work near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, loud noises, vibrations and risk of electrical

  • Must possess own vehicle or have alternative means of transportation from one site to another.
  • On-call responsibilities.
  • Must be approved by the Department of Corrections (DOC) and adhere to all DOC requirements.
